I had a chance to drive the 2022 Frontier 4x4 in SV trim yesterday. I have a ‘21 XLT FX4 and wanted to see how they compare. Here is a few thoughts on how they stack up.

Interior- Frontier has a nicer interior in some ways. The Ranger seats are slightly more comfortable to me but the layout of the frontier is better and the dash and interior trim is nicer. The SV trim level isn’t anything special though, if I were looking at one of these I would want the top trim. Frontier was generally comfortable except one area which was the back seat. The ranger back seat is way more comfortable because the frontier backrest is like literally vertical. The ranger has more room in the back as well. Not so important to me but if you ever haul adults in the back they would be happier in the Ranger. Regretfully I ran out of time and forgot to check the under seat storage of the Frontier but I’m sure it’s better than the tiny little boxes we get. Look to see how Ford improves this on the next gen.

Exterior- I like the size of the ranger better in a lot of ways. It’s just slightly bigger here and there including the bed. The frontier bed is a couple inches shorter. It’s not dramatic but a bigger bed is kind of nice on a mid-size. The Frontier bed at the mid trim level was probably more useful as it included a rail system and 110v outlet already but the ranger bed as mentioned is bigger in each direction. The fit and finish of both trucks is similar and I won’t comment on styling as it is completely subjective. The build quality of the Frontier was more impressive than I thought it would be. The panel gaps and stuff on the frontier seemed a little more consistent but both trucks were similar in that aspect.

Steering- The steering feel of the Frontier is better. It’s old school hydraulic steering and it feels great. It makes the electronic steering in the ranger feel vague in comparison. The steering in the ranger probably isn’t bad for electronic steering, I just prefer the old school rack and pinion feel which is much stiffer and feels directly connected to the road.

Power- The Ranger is faster and has more torque but the Frontier is a lot smoother. The ranger and 10spd have way more vibration and always feel clunky to me especially when I’m speeding up and having to let of the gas a bunch. On the bright side the ranger always pulls hard without much effort. It takes some coaxing to spin up the 3.8 on the frontier but it’s better than the old 4.0. Nissan feels like a last gen powertrain but not anemic like a Tacoma. This might not be a bad thing depending on who you ask. I wish my truck was that smooth but you can’t deny the ecoboost.

MPG- I did some reading and it looks like our rangers are probably going to maintain better gas mileage especially when driven hard. The frontier gets like 18-22 so not a world apart but I have driven my ranger plenty at this point and am always very satisfied with my MPG.

Conclusion? The trucks are more evenly matched than I thought. All things considered I would not sell my ranger for an SV Frontier. There’s just not that much stuff that’s better and there are definitely things that are worse. I might be enticed away for a Pro4x frontier with the nicer interior, suspension, rear axel, locker, etc. but the main draw of the last gen Nissan was they could be had dirt cheap. That is no longer then case in this economy and Nissan is asking an awful lot for the Frontier in my opinion. When the new Ranger and Colorado come out the Frontier will feel a generation behind once more. It’s a great update that should have happened 5 years ago.

I have no intention to buy another new vehicle at this time but thanks for posting a great review.

Interesting take on the steering. All the reviews I've read called it sluggish and non-responsive. Great review! I really like the look of some of the special trim packages and if I was buying today, it would be a toss between the two.

Nice review!
Honestly when I went to trade my Titan I went straight to look at the Frontier, which is in many ways a baby Titan. Nissan didn't make me happy with the trade in value for my Titan..which was an SV and had very low miles. My buddy's been a Ford guy a long time, he convinced me to look at the Ranger. The local dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and the rest is history.
I actually like the look of the current Ranger over the new Frontier, and the Ranger is a solid truck

I had the unfortunate privilege of getting to drive the new Frontier for two weeks while my Ranger was being repaired after a fender bender. I hated it every time I had to drive it. I hated even seeing it in my driveway. The closer I looked at how the Frontier was built the more it looked cheap and half-assed. I mean there’s a gap on either side of the tailgate that you can almost stick your finger through and the blocky body style looks like it’s made of Lego. It was an absolute pleasure watching it drive away back to the rental company when I picked up my Ranger. I will say that the acceleration was better than my Ranger and the handling was really responsive, but beyond that it was like driving a concrete block with concrete block seats.

Maybe it was just the lower trim level of the Frontier that the rental place purchased….I don’t know. I thought it was a piece of shit compared to the Ranger.

Always liked Nissan cars , never liked their trucks , wifey is on her second Murano ... From 2019 to present, Ranger ftw... not even close imo... Taco's may have a "styling" argument, I do like the look of the ? front end , From the outside , once you sit on both , Ranger has far more visibility from the drivers seat ... GM should just stay out until they can do better with their spare tire, sad the way that hangs down , it's all I can see when I'm beside one...
I love this little guy

Cool. Thanks for sharing. I haven't driven the 3.8, but I have driven the 4.0 v6 Frontier.

I came from a 2019 Frontier SV to a 2022 Ranger XLT. Have to say there were some good things about the Frontier, but overall I'm way happier with the Ranger. They are definitely similar in a lot of ways. In general it just feels as if the Ranger was put together with a bit more care in mind. Definitely feels as if the Ranger is quicker in most aspects as well as having better MPG. Leaving the Frontier SV for the Ranger XLT seemed like a step up in the end.

All that said I bought the Frontier from a skeezy dealership that was super push where as I bought the Ranger from a decent dealership that didn't try to mark up at all. That probably colors a lot of my perception on the vehicles.

In my experience the Nissan rentals are the lowest trim or perhaps a stripped out SV. Nissan makes a significant amount of Frontiers for the rental car market and I have driven several low spec trucks from National and Enterprise over the years. The lowest Spec Nissans are undoubtedly cheaper than the XL ranger and it definitely shows. The Ranger has a great base model compared to some of the others. The only thing Ford likes to get wrong is a tiny 4” screen as standard. I hate the functionality of the 4” screen on my XLT Expedition compared to the ranger.

I don't have fond recollections about Nissan durability but I will say our Rangers and the Nissan trucks of this size share something that my wife preferred: a center console parking brake.

I had considered the last generation Frontier Pro4x before the model change as they seemed like a really great deal for the dollar. Love some of the standard features on that level. But the first (and last ) Nissan (2001 Sentra) I owned didn’t sit well with me. It was a lemon right from the beginning, leaking in the trunk in the first month, they could never get the breaks to stop clunking hard when braking, then the timing was changed due to some engine recall which made the engine really loud, blew head gasket at around 100,000 km and Nissan’s corporate customer service was horrible. My wife reminded me of all that and then I dropped the idea of looking at a frontier. But I have to say - I really like the look of the new generation. those look really sweet in my eyes. I would almost forget the whole Sentra experience and get the new Frontier and give Nissan a try again. That Sentra though was the lemon of all lemons. ?
