Better to be SAFE than sorry.
I use 4WD (not 4L) sometimes when driving on washboarded forest service roads, especially when driving uphill - it helps keep the chatter down - it isn't needed to drive the road but it does make it a bit less bumpy. My thought is - if you have it, why not use it?

Thank you for understanding where I was going with this. My late Grandpa would always say that "it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

Recently I've started not using my driveway... so as I'm bouncing through the ditch it's handy to have that extra gearing. Yes, the red crayons taste best.

4L works great with Trail Control engaged. I set it for 3-5 mph and it crawls through stream beds and deeply eroded logging roads; I can concentrate on picking my line thru the terrain without worrying about my speed Especially nice for steep downgrades. I try to engage both plus the e-locker at least once a year, just to give the gearing a different "set" and put fresh electrons in the relevant modules;)

When I first bought my Ranger I thought the Trail Control just going to be some gimmick add-on they put on there but it turned out to be super useful. I used it a lot when we were up in Sedona and it really helps you navigate through some of the rougher terrain keeping your speed low and steady. It's especially handy going up/down steep grades keeping your line and not getting out of control.

That terrain looks similar to the "road" going thru Grand Staircase Nat'l Mon.

Like a few others, I use 4L on my gravel driveway just to see if it still engages and disengages. Driveway is about 200'. I zigzag a bit and might even back up part of the way. Occasionally I'll use the rocker switch to lock out gears 2 through 10, to keep it in first gear, so that it doesn't shift up to third immediately.

These little things make my life fuller! :sunglasses:
edited - fixed a tiny error.
