How far is out of gas ?

My first tank of dealer free gas is up...
Time to switch to premium gas from now on...
My warning came on...and have been driving awhile... can't remember if it warning said 50 miles or what...
My dash cluster is saying this...

5 Miles to Go...

My gas guage is just now in the red.

Anyone run their tank past warning... Do you have one more gallon or so left... I always new how much gas was left and how many miles I could go when the gas light turned on in my Heritage model F150's...

The furthest I ever went was also 5 miles to empty while towing, then I chickened out and filled up... 18.51 gallons went in the tank that day, so more than the specs say about the max volume. But I think you should keep on truckin and tell us what happened.

The specs I had seen from Ford was 18.0 Gallons.

How accurate the warning is depends on how accurate you MPG lie-o-meter is.

Your truck being basically brand new tells me it's likely not spot on.

And as stated above, running out of gas or even extremely low can be taxing on your fuel pump.


It'll warn you again everytime you start the truck with it's new estimate. And then again at something like 25 miles, 20, 15, 10, and 5.

I start to plan when and where I'm going to refuel at the 50 mile warning for daily driving. Of course that's different than I treat refueling on road trips

I gotten down to 20 miles to empty then put in 18.5 gals.

There have been multiple threads on this, just search "empty" in the search box and choose search in titles only.

Regardless, i would have a spare can of fuel in the back when I decided I was going to find out, and I would also make sure that the can I was using was able to add fuel to the tank (there on threads on that as well).

I rarely go past half tank without filling up. Just a routine i've gotten used to years ago. I think once I did get to 10 miles to empty while on a road trip. That's the lowest i've ever gone.

Living and travelling in the rural west it never occurs to me to go below a quarter tank and if road tripping I start looking for A gas station at half.
At least twice it was nearing empty when the chance to fill presented itself.

Here is the info on running out of gas from the manual. Also a photo to validate the 18.8 folks.

So to answer the question; what I gather per the engineers "empty" is 18.8 less 1.3 gals for safety - so 17.5 gallons.

To a rockstar - empty is 18.8 gallons.
