Sounds more like competition for the Maverick than the Ranger. It's an AWD unibody. Even states that in the article.

It's a compact. Ranger is Mid-size.
In the story it states- To compare, the Hyundai Santa Cruz’s closest rival is the new Ford Maverick,

Looks like a competitor for the Maverick, but they just made the Maverick look alot better IMO.
Designers are smoking something stronger than Devils Lettuce and not just for this particular vehicle. ?

I’m not going to lie, I like it a lot. Would I own it? No, but for the wife? Maybe. Her Tucson has been SOLID. I’ve owned a ton of vehicles over the years, the Tucson has by far been the least problematic. As others have stated, that’s not competition for the Ranger at all, that’s competition for the Maverick.

Open air hatchback.

But I do like the looks of it. Should do well with a certain type of person.

I believe people are going to snatch these, and the Mavericks, up as soon as their available.
Those homeowners who don't need a full or mid size pickup. The weekenders who run to Lowes for bags of soil, mulch, gardening stuff, for their gardens. Small business deliveries. Mom's with a couple of kids who don't want'/need an suv. Those folks that have to hook up their small 4 x 6 utility trailer everytime they go to Lowes/Home Depot.
Throw in 275 hp, same as our Rangers, in a small "truck" that weighs 6-7-800 lbs less and you have a pocket rocket.
And remember, there hasn't been a small pick up since Ford discontinued the original Ranger's in 2011. Ford had gone as far as they could with an outdated design, and sales fell. These new "small" trucks have all the modern bells n whistles that have become part of the norm. There safe, reliable, and easy to drive, park in any garage, and cheap to buy.
I see younger owners starting up the whole mini truck thing again.
And if they do take off, look for the other manufacturers to jump in.

Yup. This. Doesn't compete with the Ranger.

Well stated. And I completely agree. In fact, I was really wanting to wait for the Maverick myself prior to buying a Ranger. The limiting factor on the Mav (for me anyway) was the towing limit of 4K. I occasionally have a need to tow a car trailer with a late '70's car on it, and the Mav simply won't do it, where the Ranger will. Other than that, it would have been the Maverick in my garage.
