I replaced the factory muffler with a Borla muffler in the stock system. Looks like the shop added a length of standard pipe to fill a gap between the tailpipe an the replacement muffler. The other day the tailpipe broke from the added length of pipe an I heard the it banging around. I thought about slipping a piece of pipe over the break an clamping it on but there isn't much to grab on the tailpipe section because it starts to curve over the axle right after the break.

Sounds like a good reason to try a 3" cat back. I'm looking at the MBRP that's around $355. My only concern is I live in Ohio an do a lot of short trips an I'm afraid it not being stainless it won't last long.

I like the Bold performance system because it's stainless but it replaces from the factory muffler back an it isn't a 3" system. I haven't taken a good look at where the Borla was attached to the factory pipe to see if I could cut it off an slip a different one on or if it was modified by the muffler shop.

I have a Livernois tune so I wonder if my truck would gain anything from a 3" cat back system with the down pipe output being 2.5"

it's going to take a toll on your fuel mileage though but if thats not a concern then.....

Owch. That's not good the replacement muffler weld only lasted a few years.
I like the look of the Bold Performance exhaust. Never heard of that option.

A proven rule of plumbing is that flow in a given pipe is restricted to the max flow of the smallest component of the assembly, so the 3" pipe will be limited by the 2.5" downpipe. But it looks meaner and may sound better, so there's that. And if later you choose to upsize the downpipe to 3", the rest of the system is done.
The 2.5 inch restriction at the downpipe isn't the smallest restriction in the system if we look inside the factory muffler. I'd visualize the overall volume and length of the exhaust as restricting flow and the resonator ahead of the muffler having an effect. On my Magnaflow the rear muffler is gone and us just clean pipe with the replacement where the factory silencer is under the body. I guess that's how the tone is controlled with long 3 inch pipe.

Much like the intake system having restrictions in specific places you won't likely eliminate you can alter the driveability in specific ways by opening up certain areas and that might influence MPGs.

I have the borla cat back with the dual black tips. The tips look like crap after 2 years.

I just don't want to hope the person welding knows what they are doing. I sure as hell don't.
I don't think they did since it broke right at the weld. The different metals may have played a role.
Now everyone uses those 2" long clamps to connect the pipes. I'd rather paid for those than have a "hope this holds" weld job.
That being said, if you like the sound of you Borla muffler, I'd spring for the Borla cat back.
I don't think it's a comparison because when I replaced just the muffler it kept the factory resonator that gets tossed with aftermarket systems.

The black tip systems are out since I have the chrome package. I have a nice looking chrome tip from the factory. I wasn't shopping for the chrome stuff but it was on the truck an it had everything else I liked an was a end of year model with a big rebate so I decided to live with it.

Gotcha. Did not think about the resonator.

For the money and time I'll have the truck, I'm leaning hard towards the bold brand

Well you guys planted a seed in my mind that I need the aftermarket exhaust. I conveyed this to my wife and she said if I spend any more money on the Ranger, I will spend the rest of my life short one testicle. Stock exhaust it is.

I ordered the bold performance yesterday. I tried to clamp it with a 2" clamp but there wasn't much to grab onto since the curve to go over the axle is right after the break. I also saw another hole rusted in the cheap pipe the muffler shop used on the other side of the aftermarket muffler.

If anyone cares I ended up with the bold performance system. Install wasn't too bad doing it by myself on the floor of the garage. Sound is similar to the borla I removed but I'd say a little more volume but not enough to really notice unless you're really getting on it. The tip looks nice an it tucks up nice for ground clearance. The increase in volume could be do to getting rid of the resonator pipe on the replacement system.

The system in the classifieds on here was tempting me but I didn't want to move the exit to in front of the rear tires. I like a little noise when hammering it but I don't want more noise cruising around. I wasn't in a hurry to replace it but I saw they were offering free shipping so I pulled the trigger. I wonder if their website does that if they you go back to check something out a second time to get you to buy?

Any updates on this system? I'm leaning toward getting this one for the price and based on the available sound clips I can find.
