Previous vehicles I’ve been able to store my key (w/o remote) in a lock box attached to my truck. Is there a way to take apart our keys? XLT. I’ve looked through the manual but rather not break those expensive remotes. Or does anyone have a better solution?

I had a key cut that only opens the door.. $50.00
Go to a locksmith who can laser cut the key.

Key and remote should fit in a hitch lock box. Or get the keypad and just throw the whole thing in the console.

I have a Lariat and the Fob is HUGE - I disconnect the keyring, leave that inside the truck (hidden) and then put the fob in my Hitchsafe when I go hiking. Never have to worry about losing my keys while hiking again. I bet the XLT fob would fit in the hitchsafe without taking it apart, though.

It has worked out really well for me.

The hitchsafe works great until you have something attached to the trailer hitch...

The hitch safe mentioned above is what I have as well, works great. I don't do any towing, so it was an easy choice for me.

Then it sounds like the solution Surfink suggests is probably the most viable solution in your situation.
As for me I've already ordered a keyless entry pad from Cutter Ford, will probably mount it to the inside of the fuel fill door.

I have an XLT and my local Ford dealer made me a "skeleton key" for only $20!! I leave the original FOB in the truck and put the "skeleton key" in my wetsuit. Problem solved! When you open your truck again, make sure the FOB is close by to quickly disarm the alarm or it will go off.

I made a hitch safe with a piece of 2x 2 square tube and a cap welded on the end. I lock with the hitch pin and take that key with me.

Having a new key cut may be the best option. I used to always carry my Subaru valet key with me into the water. The key that detaches from the Lariat keyfob would be ruined in a couple of sessions from the salt.

How waterproof is the HitchSafe?

I'm not sure it is terribly waterproof, but I only put my fob in there when I'm hiking, so it doesn't stay in there while I'm driving.

I would rather have a key with the truck. I used to use one of those hide a key boxes under the frame, but I like the hitch safe better.

You know, I wonder if the keyfob would still be actively detected in the HitchSafe, too.

It is not. I tried - originally I bought a faraday cage bag to prevent that, but the fob only works from like 3 feet away or less. It is a pretty short distance.
