When we moved to beautiful PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ, ? we gave away my cheap 10 yr old grill. Now that we're almost done settling in, I've been advised by the boss lady our next investment should be a nice gas grill. I really don't know where to start with that as I'm used to cooking, if you want to call it that, on a small, cheap grill. What should I be looking for in a moderately priced ($500-$1000 ish) grill?

Thanks in advance for any insights you have!

I've tried a lot of different ones in the past and have always found Weber makes a good grill. They seem to cook more evenly and last a long time as long as you take care of them. Here I have an outdoor kitchen and have a Summerset drop in grill but if I was going to buy another standing gas grill I'd be a Weber. I think the one I had back in MA was their Silver series grill.

BTW...When is the 5G BBQ party? ?

I hate gas grills. They cook way too hot and don’t impart any particular flavor to food. They are simply an outside stove. That being said, Weber is always a good choice. They are reliable, moderately priced and parts are readily available. I have the three burner Spirit model, but mainly use it for burgers and such. I replaced the grates with GrillGrates, which helps control the flare ups that are the Achilles heel of gas grills.

I do all of my other cooking on a Big Green Egg or Weber Kettle, which are both charcoal. If you are at all creative with your cooking and want to be able to control your temperatures (e.g. cook “low and slow”), add a little smoke flavor, etc., charcoal or wood is the way to go. They make much better tasting food. I would get a pellet grill over a gas grill if I had to do it over.

If your goal is to simply cook outside a gas grill is ok. If you want to make great tasting food, there are much better options.

? You're right I'm not a good Polack and don't like Polish food! Luckily I take after my mom who's Italian and love every Italian dish out there. ?
It’s only my wife and I most of the time and we bought the Q series at Lowe’s. If your eligible the military discount applies I think.

These are really nice smaller grills too When I fist bought my house here I was still living in MA and bought one of these. It worked great and was nice and portable and I've even cooked steaks on it for four of us. Now I wish I never sold it because it's portable (you can takeout off the stand) and use it while traveling.

If you go this route make sure you get the regulator so you can use a larger 20lb lp tank. IIRC they come with one of those smaller screw on lp bottles.

So far all you guys are leaning toward Weber, and the online reviews I've read do the same. I can see one of those in my future, probably.

I'm not a foodie, and am not adventurous in my outdoor cooking. Burgers, steaks, chops, hot dogs and chicken are mostly what I do. Although I would like to learn to do some proper veggies from time to time.

I'm a cheap gas grill guy. I figure they all do the same thing, supply flame to cook food. Name on the outside doesn't change that and it's the chef that makes the food. I normally get 5 or 6 years out of a cheap grill and figure I can buy another and still not spend what I would have on something with a Gucci name.

Fair enough. I do suggest using GrillGrates for at least one side of the grill. That would give you space to move food to safety if (when) the grill starts flaming up, but leaves the other side open if you want to have the flames add some sear to the food.

Us too. We used to have a huge, nice expensive grill with all the extras. It lasted about 3 years. We then bought a cheap $88 grill from Walmart. It does great! It lasts about the same length of time. When it wears out, we have an extra in storage & it didn’t cost an arm & a leg.?

I have one of the Qs for quick burgers but everything else goes on my kettle grills. I have (2) 22 inch and a 26 inch. Sometimes I fire up all 3 if we have company. The 26 is great for turkeys. Tried a Traeger pellet grill but that was junk and everything had a chemical soot flavor from the pellet binders that many can't taste.
