Took our 22 Ranger in for The Works today. Upon picking it up, began to drive out of the and lot immediately noticed massive amounts of smoke from the tailpipe and lack of power when accelerating. Turned around in the sales lot and returned to Quicklane. After a drain and refill, the tech apologized and told me that the truck had been double filled (either truck hadn't been drained and then filled as if empty or a tech filled it, didn't mark it as done and another tech filled it again). Regardless, I'm not too pleased with their lack of attention to detail especially on what is basically a brand new truck given we have less than 10,000 miles on it.

Two questions for those on the forum, first I've never dealt with this before in all the years I have done engine service myself or paid someone to do it, even though I caught this quickly and got it rectified, is there anything I need to worry about regarding damage to the engine?

Is there anything I need to follow up service-wise with Ford either now or in the future in the event any damage from the overfill doesn't become apparent until later?

Thanks,

WOW, is that documented?
Being that you caught it and did not get up to speed , you should be ok as far as blowing seals but I would be worried about the oil foaming that occurred and scoring the bearings.
And how much oil made it into the cylinders, this coated the plugs and O2 sensors as well as entered the CAT
So you have to factor in:
1. Starting it and driving it out of the bay
2. You starting it and idle time before you started to drive and distance traveled back to the bay.

in that timeframe the oil MAY have been foaming , foaming is NOT good for bearings

I'd document the hell out of it. Then start doing your own oil changes.

That's coming from a guy (with 230k+ on a different vehicle) who always had the same shop do it. The hassle. I get it. Oil recycling, the work itself, etc.

The thing is, since a certain set of economic policies kicked in and it got so stupid expensive for an oil change and rotation that I can no BS save myself $80 doing it myself... it's no longer less hassle.

You used to be able to drive in and they would do it while you waited and you're done in 20-40 tops. Nobody really does that now, they want you drop it off and leave it there for part of the day. THAT is a hassle. Getting marked up another 1.5x the material cost for labor is a hassle. Having somebody overfill your motor... is a hassle.

Not trying to be a dick at all, just saying these stories are all too common now. People that work at dealerships are the first to admit the newest idiot at the shop with the least experience is the oil change guy. That's who's doing your "oil package" oil change that lots of people buy with the vehicle.

No thanks. Hope your truck is okay ?

Thanks,
They usually bring the dip stick around to show you the fill line, don't they?

This is the reason that I still change my own oil. Too many people working at dealerships that don't really care like I do. I worked as a Diesel/Auto mechanic for 44 years and I don't see the same pride that I had when working. As long as I can still get up off the ground, I will continue to change my oil.

Make sure the issue was documented. The service manager can likely go back into the work order and add comments if they did not open a new work order to inspect it. I would save a hard copy as well should you need to get an engine good willed later on due to a failed bearing.

Man, adding to this, I wonder if that was enough for the oil to make contact with the crank (crank dipping into the oil pan's oil supply).

Probably caught early enough but I would be concerned about everything you mentioned. I hope they documented their issue.

Same here...ya the odds of things like is small but it only takes one screw up to f'up your day...unless you're willing to check the level and see if the oil cap is on before you leave...crossed threaded oil filter and or drain plug anyone?

I let the dealer do my first oil change, next morning, dirty oil spots (several) all under my truck so I call and they admitted a boo boo , which I told them I understood and it was ok to have a boo boo, but it was NOT ok to have a boo boo and leave the boo boo for my garage floor to soak up and they could have at least attempted a shot of brake cleaner to dilute it some ... they didn't seam to really care ? and ive done it myself ever since... same reason I live with a somewhat crappy transmission, terrified to leave it with them...

Chuck,
I was taught the same ethic. Reminded me of a quote that my Dad used: "If you don't have time to do the job right the 1st time when are you going to find the time to correct it?"

Thanks,
I’d drive a while to see effects, but doubt problems as you caught problem quickly.
Good luck.
