Decided to fish the Gulf tomorrow versus today, so I installed the bed lighting kit F150LEDs sent me as I volunteered to be the test case. My goal was to tap into the same wire that lights up the cargo lamp so the bed lights would work off the key fob unlocking, doors opening and the cargo lamp switch on the dash. Ended up just wiring them into the wiring tied to the lights coming on by the key fob and doors . Will add some darkness shot in a little while. Will post detailed installation steps and pictures by tomorrow night.

The wires on the kit they sent me will require at least 5 more feet of length. I ended up trimming 8 inches off the end of the lights in the bed. I will be sending all the instructions and changes needed to F150LEDs so they can offer kits for sale.

Attached pictures taken in the garage during the day. Not completely dark in my garage.

Ditto on very nice and awaiting install info. I don’t plan to add a cover but extra lights in the bed seem worthwhile.

Since I had the cover, the rail assemblies were perfect for running the LED strips down the side rails. I used the tube of clear silicone adhesive to attach the long strips on each side as that worked well.

All,

I got tied up today. Will work on posting the installation pics and instructions tomorrow. Used the lights this morning for a Gulf fishing trip. We normally get to the launch area right at the hint of first light. The lights worked great!

Here are the detailed instructions. I hope I kept them straight forward enough. :)

Thanks for the write-up @SRAces , I was able to get everything running perfectly, and I love how the lights turn off/on via key fob. GIF of the setup in action below:

I wanted to add a few notes for anyone following this guide:
  • There are a few open holes along the body that you can fish the wiring in to the cab via. I had a difficult time identifying which cover to punch through before figuring this out. I ended up routing from the rear driver door sill rather than the front driver door.
  • In my case there were two grey wires with purple stripes, and one purple wire with a grey stripe...all next to each other at the harness. The first grey/purple wire I tapped resulted in very dim lighting, but the other one worked.
  • Those door sill panels or whatever they're called are damn near impossible to initially lift without snapping some tab (new truck?), so pry gently.
F150LEDs also makes a hood light with a tilt sensor that I highly recommend as well given that our trucks contain zero lighting in the engine bay.

FYI - Use the white wire with the dark green strip in the wiring bundle under the door sill paneling on the driver's side (back seat door). That is the wire tied to the cargo lamp. So you can use the cargo lamp switch to activate the lights when you want. Bed lights will go out at 3mph or after 10 minutes if left on.

Thanks again for the great write up and Q&A! Only thing I am doing differently is hiding the wire, there is a threaded thru hole just above the front driver side tie down that leads straight down in front of the leaf spring. I am running down that area and then inn thru a grommet at the bottom corner of the cab. Last night I was able to fish a piece of bell wire from the still cover, there's a small hole, once it reached the grommet I pulled out I pulled it out with a hooked wire easily. I did have to rotate the bell wire to get it to pop up into the grommet opening. I tried a piece of bare copper 12/2 wire first but it was too stiff. I wanted to at least try this grommet first, my undercoating is pretty thick. Once I am done I will silicone the grommet hole when I pop it in.

I made my own led light strips, only went about 32 inches on each side due to the clamps and adjustment screws on my retractable cover.
Since I have to run a wire across the back of the bed I plan to explore a suitable mounting location for a led strip across the back, if I am running a wire I might as well power more lights. Third pic is from under the truck where the white bell wire dropped down. I will take a pic of the hole in the bed later.

I dunno what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the strips to stay stuck with the included silicone. I'm in MN, but I've been screwing around with these for about 9 months now (only in warm conditions). Plus, I have a college degree, but I think this might be over my comfort level to try (not to mention I haven't tried my FORSCAN device yet either for the same reason!)
