Wondering if any of you carry a regular electric powered air compressor to use with the 150 watt/12.5 amp power point on the rear of the center console ?
I have the pictured Porter Cable compressor I used to carry in our motor home...it's a spare as I have a full size garage compressor. Worked great in airing up motor home tires to 75-80 psi.
It draws 10 amps, so theoretically should work OK (haven't tried it yet).
Have room in bed storage box for it, and think it would come in handy for the Ranger and travel trailer.
Anyone foresee any problems using it (obviously with engine running) ?
Yes, I do have/carry a portable 12 volt, but this has a lot more "ommmph"

I tried carrying my Harbor Freight one gallon Fortress compressor in the truck...
2018%2F11%2FHarbor-Freight-Fortress-Air-Compressor.jpg

and realized that although it's super quiet, it quickly runs out of air reserve and the compressor doesn't push enough CMF to effectively pump up a big tire...also it's no where as light as my VIAIR - 40045 400P...

Yeah, I have a 450P that I carry, but the Porter Cable is a spare, doing nothing, so I figured "why not" It's much smaller and lighter than the Harbor Freight and similar units, but it knocks out 150 psi very quickly. I did use it on the road with the motor home running it off the generator while in a parking lot with a flat. Also helped out others on the road that needed a compressor.
Just kicking the idea around.

If the power point will run it, go for it. You’ve got it and it’s worth a try. Test it out first though. That plug-in does not like surges.

That's kind of the info I was looking for as I haven't placed any real load on that outlet. Compressor shouldn't surge, but it will cycle on/off.
Just wondering if you boondocker/overlander members use that outlet for heavy duty use.
Gonna play with it today.

As a general rule, I think that any compressor designed to plug into a 12V socket (or an inverter designed to charge cellular phones) is something to be avoided. I want one with enough power that it really must be connected directly to the battery, or a dedicated battery circuit just for this purpose.

Well, disregard all of this....just tried the Porter Cable and it just clicks on, but compressor won't cycle. Just not enough power from that power point.
I'll just stick to the Viair that I carry (yup, with the direct to battery clips).

This is my second one of these inexpensive Chinese 12V compressors. I gave the first one to my son after 10+ years of Jeep use, and bought a new one for myself. They have been sold under multiple brand names, and you can find them on Amazon for well under $100. All metal. Not plastic.

Didn't want to start another 12 volt compressor thread...plenty of that already posted.
Was just interested in the 110 volt power point outlet on the console.

Yeah, I was just going to post there isn't enough power, but you figured that out. 150W is about 1.25 amps.

I have a Viair 400P. Been happy with it. It works well to inflate my paddle boards. To make it work more efficient I will adapt a tank to it. The nice small diameter long tanks are expensive. The large diameter ones are cheap. I would recommend getting an air gun for it. It creates enough pressure to blow say brake calipers and other items.

Power equals voltage times current
P = E X I
150 = 12 X 12.5
12.5 amps

He may have been refering to 110 volt outlet.
150= 110 I
I = 1.36 Amps

Yes, you are probably correct, I was thinking 12 VDC and he was referring to the inverter.
