After reading an article where this guy had his phone fall and flip the drive selector nob into 4 wheel at high speed and blew his transfer case apart. I also had mine flip. Not sure how but luckily it was at a low speed.
I found this. Really nice.

If his truck shifted to 4wd while at highway speeds, he had issues before this because you have to be completely stopped and then shift to neutral first to get to 4L and 4H won't engage once you're at highway speeds (my manual says 110km/h which should be 68 mph) and disengages if it's on and you exceed that.

Those rings were designed by a member of this forum, so hopefully it was his Etsy store that is selling them. They are useful for accidentally shifting at speeds that would allow 4H to work; although I personally haven't had an issue, others here, including the person that designed that ring, have bumped theirs and shifted to 4H, which if left on while vehicle is on dry pavement is bad.

You have to be in neutral to go to 4lo, right? Sounds like marketing to to sell those little thingies.
You are correct. 4L requires the vehicle to be stopped and then shifted to neutral. 4H can be shifted on the fly but not at highway speeds and cuts out of engaged and you reach those speeds.

Ok. Took it up to 40mph turn dial and went into 4 wheel drive. So unlike others states. It CAN be put into 4 wheel drive in drive while driving.

I think of it this way. If my wife (or someone else that is not familiar with 4 wheel drive) drove it and somehow it got moved, they would be driving around for who knows how long that way. Then come back and say that there may be something wrong with my front end because it handled weird on turns.

I would've thought that the BCM would check engine rpm against gear selection against wheel rpm before sending a command to the transfer case to engage. Maybe it wasn't a Ford.
I haven't had that happen to me, but if Ford designed the knob to first pull it up then rotate, that would eliminate accidental engagement.
