Yesss, a good thing it died.
As it was *in addition* to existing taxes, I agree.

CA is working on a Road Charge to *replace* the fuel taxes, which I'm fully in favor of.

http://caroadcharge.com/

At $0.02/mile vs $0.511/gal

For one tank of gas (roughly - using 18 gals) with my average MPG (21mpg):

$0.02/mile tax = 21 * 18 * $0.02 = $7.56 vs $9.198
$0.03/mile tax = 21 * 18 * $0.03 = $11.34 vs $9.198
$0.04/mile tax = 21 * 18 * $0.04 = $15.12 vs $9.198

Depending on the specifics, I'd much more be in favor of a use-tax instead of a fuel-tax for supporting infrastructure, especially given how prevalent EVs and high-mpg vehicles are in CA, at least in the larger cities/metros now.

Cars nowadays have black boxes if you will. Doesn’t really matter, if you get into a bad enough accident they can pull all the info from the vehicles system anyways.
Happened to a coworker 15 years ago with his Honda Civic. He was killed from hitting a tree. All the info the investigators needed was pulled from the cars system.

Has anybody figured out how to adjust privacy settings to reduce Google collection and use of some data? The Android Auto app on my phone doesn't offer ANY settings. The Settings on the Sync touchscreen provides only limited setting capabilities.

I'm fine with location and speed being used -- that's how Waze works.

I'm not OK with other "such as..." items being used, collected, and shared.

It looks like there may be many settings screens that can be configured, as Google discusses here: https://support.google.com/googleappsincar/answer/9941814?hl=en

Has anybody found optimal settings that reduce sharing of info while not breaking Android Auto functionality (e.g., still being able to view Waze on Sync screen)?

In the meantime, I'm using Waze on my phone screen. I stream Spotify via Bluetooth, which allows limited controls to appear on the Sync screen.

Thanks for your insight!

Hey everyone,

I got a new phone and went to set it up with Android Auto, then encountered the disturbing Sync screen, below.

I really don't care if location is known, which might be needed for using Waze on the screen. The other stuff is weird. Who wants their insurance company or somebody's lawyer getting ahold of speed data? Why would Google want to track fuel level? And what other "such as" info gets collected? I'd like to shut that all off.

I tried to find a way to disable collection and use of data, but there doesn't seem to be one. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Erik

(btw, dog hair on screen is no fault of Android)

Not really, the only way to opt-out is to not use those services.

You're already allowing all of this "such as..." to be collected, used, and shared, just by using the phone itself and the services on there. The permissions for Android Auto for these things are just on top of the same permissions that are already required and have been accepted for the same apps to work on your phone. For specifics, dig into the privacy policy for things like Waze (which google wholly, and entirely, owns).
