I tried the indents to close the door and quickly realized this is a joke. My fingers slid right off the indents without the door closing. If that was the intention of the indents then they would have been made the other way with the "ridge" on the inside . I agree with Phil that it is part of the structure of the door.

The metal is very thin so indents are to add rigidity to the panel. The same reason you see ribs on the roof of a van and why the body panels are not flat but curved and usually have a ridge on them.
