Hey BassRanger,

Jon from Canshift here - we definitely are able to control the transmission on newer vehicles too!
@canshift_jon313
Hi Jon and welcome to our little world ! A question regarding the above quote-- How much are you able to "control" the transmission ? When I (we) use sport mode and choose to shift manually, the downshifts are good, but when I go to upshift, it's only a request....the truck shifts when the computer wants to, be it redline or if I let off the gas a little. Is it possible to force the trans to shift "upon input" ? Thanks !!!

i did that once with the button on the shifter.
geared down....sure the engine revved higher, but there's no oompf to the engine braking on this pea sized engine, so i downshifted again, and whoops......Ford pass probably uploaded the high revs to Fords Data base and in 30k when i have engine troubles, the warranty will be denied.

so i rarely play with the button on downshifts anymore. only when racing soccer moms off the line.
When I first had my FiST, I missed a 6th to 4th downshift trying to jump out from behind slower traffic when the passing lane cleared.

I was used to 5 spds and got the clutch about halfway engaged in 2nd gear at about 70mph before I realized what had happened. ?

Tach buried itself instantly. If I had to guess, I'd say that little 1.6 EB spun up to about 9.5k rpms, it redlined at 7k.

The car went into limp mode immediately, but I was close to home and rolled the dice. Luckily no damage that I could ever tell. That car continued on another 55k miles of being rode hard and put away wet with no problems whatsoever.

These little EcoBoosts are stout!

Is it actually possible to over-rev the engine with manual shifting, or will the electronics prevent it from happening? For at least the past 25-ish years, the Allison transmissions in medium and heavy trucks will not perform a shift that will over-rev the engine. They delay the shift until it is safe. I’m not implying that the Ranger is a Class 6 truck, just saying that the technology is not new.

Two of my last cars had "manual" shift options for the automatic. I only used them in really bad weather for more engine braking. In the ranger, I have sport mode and its overly aggressive engine braking or button-pushing if I need more control.

Ill pass on wheel-mounted shifting with this engine/transmission. I've seen it going thru the gears when I want to haul ass - it does a good enough job.
This reminds me of the Pedal Commander...it does nothing for actual performance gain...I think the S mode does a better job...an actual tune would be money better spent for both the pedal and shifting IMO...

i saw 6500rpm and climbing.
sure the computer is trying to slow the engine and stop it from over revving, but we are still talking physics here....the computer cant change that.
upshifting it has more control, but not downshifting.
The Allison will not downshift if it will rev the engine beyond the programmed rev limit. You can push the buttons all you want, but it will hold the higher gear until it is safe to downshift. Engines can usually tolerate a little bit higher revs when there is no fuel delivery, so it may go past the point where the rev limiter would have cut fuel delivery when compression-braking. It will upshift to protect the engine.

Ford's SelectShift won't execute a shift that will over-rev the engine, and Ford's ECU have had over-rev fuel cut parameters for a LONG time. The system won't force an upshift though, so it could be possible to over-rev if gravity is accelerating the car past the rev-limit while you are in that mode.

This could be used off-road, but that's opening a can of unlimited money to be used for a "toy".
Personally, I drop it in sport right before the moment I hit the dirt because if my hand is on the shifter while flooring it off road my hand always hits the shifter into drive like in 2 seconds so pressing those buttons is impossible. But even then I wouldn't mess with changing 10 gears off-road I'd prefer a 4, 5, or even 6 speed max.
I can see this being the most useful on pavement flying through the gears for nothing more than having fun.
To each their own. Enjoy.

This subject reminds me...why is there a preference for manual trans over auto for off roading? I'd imaging burnt clutch or stalling at the worst possible moment in a middle of a rock climb...

I hate stalling out my dirt bike going up rocky hills.
I'm saving the rock crawling for a few more years down the road I'm in my mid 20's. I would love to control the down shifts before a turn to have more control and get it more sideways but then again 10 gears is a lot. Trophy trucks use paddle shifters.

Ya definitely rather have auto for offroad, but since i havent been offroad much since im poor and only slowly building my truck im on road more. And not nice flat roads, its lots of hills where i am in wa state, and the truck just sucks downshifting, it usually sits at a gear and struggles quite a bit. Cant speak for others though. Basically sport with paddle shifter for daily driving, and drive mode for when offroad would be ideal.

More control, less ATF to over heat. If burning the clutch is a concern, stuff 'er in low range.

Hey Dave - Jon from Canshift. This intrigues me, definitely something I could look into. I would need access to a vehicle with these options.

What exactly is TC mode and what would you expect the external display to show? Our current product uses a 4 digit, 7-segment display, but this is soon to be replaced with an OLED which would allow for more data to be displayed
TC = Trail Control

I use the paddle shifters on my wife's Subaru a lot, when driving in the mountains. Though, she has a real 'manual' mode where the paddle controls actual up shifts and down shifts.

This subject reminds me...why is there a preference for manual trans over auto for off roading? I'd imaging burnt clutch or stalling at the worst possible moment in a middle of a rock climb...

There are a ton of reasons, but it comes down to simplicity. Less moving parts on manual transmissions than auto transmission. I had a 1985 Toyota 4runner that was an auto. There was this problem where, if you were on an incline for a decent amount of time, the fluid would drain out of the torque converter and you'd be dead in the water. Once on flat ground, the torque converter would fill back up and you'd be fine. Manual transmissions actually have more control during decent because there is no slipping in the torque converter and you can't go faster than the gears will allow.
