After reading that article on of the comments said: (pretty spot on)
“Ford identified the root cause of the alleged defect as interference between the valve and piston within the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engines”

No way is that truly the root cause.

That’s the symptom of the root cause... which is likely a timing chain or timing chain tensioner failure or something like that.

The only way the valve and piston would come in contact is if something happens that throws off the timing. And whatever caused that is the actual root issue.

Article I read said the valves were substandard from a supplier and the keepers were coming loose. The valve then dropped into the piston.
