Well abandoned my beloved 2004 and picked up my 2019 yesterday. What are people’s thoughts on break-in these days? Periods of under 60 mph with short bursts in the 70 to 80 range? Anything special for the turbo other than not engaging before warmed up? Dealer said nothing about an initial oil change at 1,000 miles. Don’t people do that anymore to ensure and lasting casting sand has been removed. Thx for your thoughts.

From the Owner's Manual:

Engine
Avoid driving too fast during the first
1,000 mi (1,500 km). Vary your speed
frequently and change up through the
gears early. Do not labor the engine.

Only other thing I noticed besides the 1000 mile engine guide lines was when looking up the axle break-in procedure... it says to not tow for the first 500 miles and to not drive faster than 65 mph with time to let the diff cool for 20 min after driving 20 min. But to be honest I think this is something you can do if you want but it’s warrantied regardless of how you drive it. So if yo I want to hammer it from day one it won’t really matter.

No. If it mattered, Ford would probably make you do it or decline warranty if you didn't...

It's not that its required its recommended to get all the break in oil out that might be left or other bits etc for a healthier engine!

Break in oil was used years ago to help seat in the rings. Now days machining and rings are so much better that break in oil is not needed. I will probably change mine if I ever get it (it has been sitting in a Wayne Parking lot for a week now) at five thousand miles. It really depends on how you drive. Start and stop city driving is harder on your oil than cruising the highway.

I see no reason to change oil after 1000 miles. This engine does not have break in oil (ie, mineral oil). The oil filter will capture fine particles and the oil itself doesn't break down until after 10,000 miles -- it's a modern day synthetic oil good for 10,000 miles. As others have mentioned, I'll probably do my first oil change around the 5000 mile mark and closer to 10,000 miles after that.

I'm going to wait till 5K or more depending on the oil life reading from the computer. For our fleet vehicles, the dealership told us to just wait till the computer oil life was in the 20% range for the first oil change. My work pickup had over 7500 miles on it before the first oil change. The computers and new oils now days sure are different than the 3000-mile oil change interval a lot of us are used to.

These engines are test ran and ring seated then oil drained and re filled.

Regardless of type of oil they used it for break in and it takes more then one flush go get everything out of it which is why we recommend 1000miles.

Yes the oil filter catches most of it but it can not catch it all.

The owners manual asks for specific driving form because it is still finishing the break in procedure which can then cause more contaminants then 5000 miles later.
