Hello all,
This is my first turbo so please go easy. I have a 2021 XLT FX4 Ranger. I have 1300 miles on it. I have installed the FPP tune and yesterday I installed the K&N cold air intake. I did a shakedown run yesterday and at first had a lot of hesitation and turbo lag. That is mostly gone today. I have noticed though that when I let of of WOT I get a couple of backfires. Is this normal or should I worry? I figured you guys would be better to answer this than Google.
Thank you,
BTW do you know that our rangers at stock are faster at zero to 60 the the Subaru WRX and STI. And I know as I am a retired Subaru dealer.

I installed the FPP tune but not the filter, no backfires. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in but I don't think our trucks should be backfiring?

Have you tried it without the K&N? Seems like a lot of folks here run the FPP without the K&N, so if the filter is upsetting the air/fuel mix you would likely be fine without it.

Do you have a stock exhaust?

Is your exhaust stock? I had more "gurgle/pops" after a good pull after installing the FPP on my 2019. I run an MBRP turndown.

I am running the FPP Tune with the K&N with no backfires. I have never had a backfire after loading any K&N filter in past vehicles, either.
(Edited to add: I have no CAI just the stock box with an aFe "system scoop")

Good mention, I run a roush CAI and borla(fpp) exhaust but no backfires.

I still have stock exhaust. And it did not backfire until the cold air intake. I am thinking of closing off the lid. it has a filter and I do not like the idea of pulling hot engine air inside my intake.

The roush CAI has a box around it. Perhaps try the lid on.

Yeah.... I'm envisioning the flat K&N that comes with the FPP..... you're running that with no lid on the airbox?

This is the CAI I installed yesterday. You can see the top of the box and the size the lid. I can only imagine how much air it is pulling into the intake. I am going to block it off and see how it behaves. I think it is making my engine run too lean.

Interesting.... I've not seen that one yet. I'd try to revert to the stock airbox, if you can and see how that works. I'm a huge fan of a good CAI but the stock box on these Rangers is actually pretty great!

I believe it is a recent design. It is not smog legal in 15 states. I bet you can guess the first state.
