Like many others I hopped on the bandwagon for using Rotella 5-40 synthetic diesel oil quite a while ago, anything from a high performance KTM dirt bike to the lawn mower to anything that takes engine oil. Anybody else plan on using Rotella?

Pics of my beloved basic Ranger for fun

Does the rotella have same rating as what is needed for the ecoboost? Usually diesel oil has a little more zinc and its not a good thing for modern day catalitic converters. If it meets specs should be just fine.

Rotella T is formulated for diesel engines. I had a Powerstroke 6.0 in my F350 and used it then. I will not be using it in my Ranger. Additionally the 5-40 wt is not per the Ford specification.

Yes it’s not rated for gas engines, everybody knows that but a lot of people use it with much success. Ford also tells you that your differential doesn’t need servicing until 150,000 miles... I don’t trust manufacturer ratings. They don’t care how long your vehicle holds up, they want it to break after 100,000 miles when your warranty is up

I have friends who use it for antique car engines... Not me.
As a fleet mechanic I had access to the best lube experts in the world, they also said no.
That was back when it didn't matter much....
Now it does.

Your new Ranger is designed to use the best modern gasoline engine motor oil on the market and Ford recommends it.

Not to use "Scare tactics" but you may void your warranty by using the diesel grade motor oil. ( Honestly they are probably not gonna check)
I have never really convinced anyone who uses Rotella in gasoline engines to change, so this comment is likely to land on deaf ears.
I will say that I have never seen any vehicle I've owned show wear on any part which ran in oil when using good oil designed for the purpose.

I have always kept my manual transmissions and differentials out of the mud and water and changed the oil every 100,000 miles.
If I were driving where contamination was likely, it would be more often.

Zinc and phosphorus where almost eliminated from oils in the early eighties due to them clogging catalitic converters. Im sure the lubricating properties are there the zinc is the issue. Also I think Ford has an additive to their oil that helps with oil mist that hits the back of the intake valve due to direct injection. Ford may or may not check oil compatability if you had a major warranty claim on the engine but they might. I manged a 550 vehicle fleet and we had a higher rate of injector and injector pump failures on super dutys. Ford tested our diesel fuel as we used 20% bio diesel and Ford only allows up to 10 % bio. Future warranty claims were denied till we went to 10% bio. Im not a hater of Rotella as I use it in all my tractors. Bret

Hi,

Please share your DATA to support your allegations. We test to 150,000 miles for a 90 percentile user, which I highly doubt you are. Good news is your fluid change will not hurt..you are just doing so prematurely.

Well, generally speakin people are idiots.
There are tons of high quality gas engine oil.

Why would you want to use an oil not rated for gas engines and use a weight not recommended??

Makes zero sense to me.

This is what I use as well. Be sure it has the newest SN Plus rating. Last time I bought at my local NAPA they had about 50/50 stock. It’s still working its way through the system.
