5th tire, what would you do with it?

What to do with the 5th tire?

  • Change out spare (but no 5th matching wheel)

  • Rotate with all 5 (have to pay extra fee to replace onto current 4 wheels ($30?)

  • Leave it for tire damage

  • Find the 5th wheel, or buy new wheels (not very smart with the wallet)

Wish I'd seen that website way back when I had the bright idea of buying a fifth tire/wheel and doing 5 wheel rotations. Dealt with an Ebay vendor with high ratings who listed a rim that looked identical to the ones in my Lariat but by the time I bought a tire and pressure sender, had them mounted and attempted the first rotation I discovered the rim wasn't the one pictured and wouldn't take the Ford cap. Back and forth with the vendor got me nowhere.

Here's a grab from the link @Ranger_Rocks provides and there are the two rims. What is the one on the right from?

Hi John,

Are you asking what kind of wheel the right wheel is? It is one of the upgraded wheels usually found on the Lariat. I believe mine came with those, it's also the same picture you posted as the $155 6 spoke gray U spoke.

If you are asking what the $175 option wheels are from, those are from the sport trim's I believe. I also have a set of those wheels as well from a Ranger take-off. If it isn't the sport trim, it's just the wheel upgrade option that some people might of had on their truck already or manually upgraded. Hope this helps.

Warm regards,
Brandon

Yep, the $155 wheel on the left is the standard Lariat wheel. The $175 wheel on the right is one of the optional 18" wheels. They are pretty similar, but I much prefer the the optional wheel, which is what my truck has.

The one on the right in my photo from my truck is the factory Lariat rim. The one on the left is the mismatched one the Ebay vendor sent me when they misrepresented what they had.

So I have an oddball 'Sport' wheel that the center cap won't swap to and doesn't look like the other rims.

Wasn't my goal and I never got resolution on it. Went back to four wheel rotations and I have a spare Michelin with zero miles sitting.

Maybe it might be a relatively better spare than the spare they have underneath though :) Could just pop your michelin with the oddball wheel and if the need arises, it will be somewhat be better haha :sun:

Yeah, but if I'm on a trip and need to use the spare I'd rather have a matching rim so I can pop the center cap on it. Plus rotating 5 tires gets maximum return on my $.

Anyone want a Sport rim cheap?

I might consider it, what price were you thinking? I don't want to lowball you, nor do I necessarily need it but could come in use someway or another since I own both sets.

You're across the country from me and I can only imagine what it would cost to ship a bare rim. If I wound up with a third of what I spent...

Using any of the non-steel OEM wheels will not work directly as a spare ONLY because the lift "T" (what the center bore rests on) is 3.5+" wide and the center bore of the wheel is 2.5"... the wheel won't sit correctly on the "T".

For my spare OEM 18" Lariat wheel, I got a second lift unit, cut it down to fit and re-welded back together. At the same time I made the "T"s quick swap-able as my summer wheel center bore are is perfect for the stock width "T".

The Sport wheel I bought unawares fit fine even though the center is smaller.
