5th tire, what would you do with it?

What to do with the 5th tire?

  • Change out spare (but no 5th matching wheel)

  • Rotate with all 5 (have to pay extra fee to replace onto current 4 wheels ($30?)

  • Leave it for tire damage

  • Find the 5th wheel, or buy new wheels (not very smart with the wallet)

Hello all,

I got a fifth Pilot Sport 4 SUV tire for free, amazon mistake somehow :turkey: General thoughts is I am going to leave it for a possible damaged tire from spirited driving (but this would be have to be relatively early enough it wont mess with handling with varying balding). It would be nice to buy a single stock aluminum forged wheel to replace the spare to enable 5 tire rotation but that's going to take effort and relies on luck of someone selling one. What do you all think? I feel like it will just end up sitting in the garage.

Warm regards,
Brandon

So Amazon sent you 5 tires, but you paid for four? Did they tell you to just keep it?

Buy a matching 5th wheel from the link @Ranger_Rocks provided and add it into your rotation. It's always best to have all 5 wheels match as you never know when/where you're going to get a flat. Like when you were deep off road last year and ran into the Border Patrol. Imagine if something were to happen way out there?:wink:

Btw you should edit this part here in the poll: "not very smart with the wallet". You knew that and still joined this forum! ?

I think he's saying Amazon doesn't realize the error they made.

Well that's exactly what I did, I now have a matching alloy spare, and the Ford steelie spare is sitting in my shed.

in that case, I would first see if Amazon (or the company that fulfilled the order) wanted it returned. If not, I would mount it to my spare if it fits. Options 1 and three of the poll are effectively the same thing.

I dropped mine from underneath and tossed in the garage. I carry a 12v air pump and tire plug kit instead. When I go longer trips, especially on my 2/3/4 day long fishing trips, I throw the spare in the bed and lock it in with cheap bicycle cable lock.

Darn true about having only one tire when two get beat up. Luckily I won't be taking these off-road, purely a highway tire so hopefully only one gets messed up if it ever does :fingerscrossed:

Oh I like this idea. I do have a 12v air pump, but no tire plug kit yet. Will have to add that to my truck parts list :piggybank:

Wish I'd seen that website way back when I had the bright idea of buying a fifth tire/wheel and doing 5 wheel rotations. Dealt with an Ebay vendor with high ratings who listed a rim that looked identical to the ones in my Lariat but by the time I bought a tire and pressure sender, had them mounted and attempted the first rotation I discovered the rim wasn't the one pictured and wouldn't take the Ford cap. Back and forth with the vendor got me nowhere.

Here's a grab from the link @Ranger_Rocks provides and there are the two rims. What is the one on the right from?
