2 quarts low

Changed my oil Sunday and noticed I was about 2 quarts low. About 90% of my driving is on dirt roads under 20mph, usually in 4wd. The other 10% is on 2 lane mountain roads with the occasional trip into town. I change oil every 3k-4k miles. If I wait any longer than that the truck gets louder and makes a racket when I start it up of the morning. That’s been my experience with every truck I’ve ever had because of the conditions of my driving. What isn’t normal is the burning of oil. No leaks. Running full syn 5w30. Is this normal for anyone else that does almost all slow, high rpm mountain driving with these trucks?

I can’t be exactly sure that’s how much it is low but basing off the marks on the dipstick that’s about what I figured. Does anybody know what the marks on the dipstick represent? When I fill it up it’s at the highest mark. After 3-4k miles it’s between the bottom mark and the end of the dipstick. On my old Toyota that would have been about 2 quarts.

I was down about a quart when I did my oil change in April. I assumed it was from all the idling I do in these miserable Canadian winters.

If you were actually 2 quarts low in 3-4K miles, you would see a leak. I'm not sure of how the dip stick is graduated. Next time you do an oil change and see it is low, add a cheaper oil to raise it to proper level to get an idea of exactly how low you are. When you do an oil change, are you adding 6 quarts?

I put my used oil in the actual containers the oil came in. If OP is sure about that, then the old oil wouldn't even fill a 5qt. jug. And that ain't riiight.

I said I am not sure about it. I use a 15 gallon tub to catch oil as I work on a bunch of equipment. I’ll give it a check next time but I doub I am that far off, it has to be close.

i also question these motorcraft filters. I bought a case of them and every time I change my oil there is a ton of grit and dirt and crap in the oil. I see it every time on the little bit of spilled oil I get on my hands when I pull the plug.

That's troubling to hear. Something odd going on as I have never seen actual grit or dirt in any of my oil.

I personally never had an issue with my Ranger when I was changing it every 5,000 miles. That said you clearly have an issue if you are two quarts low and you're having the racket on startup. I would verify making sure that your oil filter is not loose in any way. If everything else checks out I recommend you take it to the dealership to have them check it out. If you are under the powertrain warranty it is something that should be covered under the powertrain warranty

Well I'm thinking about it what oil and filter are you running? Obviously you stayed at a synthetic 5w30 which is good but we have no idea what brand.

Man 2 qts over 3k miles of oil "burn" is approaching oil cooled Porsche level of consumption and that seems impossible to achieve with a modern GDI engine without a single telltale sign like lots of bluish-white smoke on startup?

Are you positive you don't have a double-gasket on your filter or something that could be causing some spray out of the filter that could be harder to detect? (Because it's messy in there anyway.)

not sure it was 2 quarts. Just made an assumption. I’ll check again soon. Yeah I’m sure I don’t have 2 gaskets. Man yaw must deal with idiots often. Some of these responses kill me.
