On December 5, 2024 an O‘reilly Auto parts 18 wheeler had yellow blinking left turn signal, while me and my 1998 Ford Ranger XLT that has 588,132 original miles, (original engine-no overhaul, original 5 speed transmission-no overhaul) had a green light. The rig blocked my entire path and my ranger hit it Destroyed the ranger that I had for 23 year-bought it used with 52000 miles in 2001. On December 7, 2024, I bought a 2024 Ford Ranger XL STX. The newer ranger has been reliable for the last 11 months. Do ya’ll think 2024 ranger truck can outlast the 1998.

My truck has 38K miles and already has a rebuilt transmission.

So let's consult the Magic 8 Ball...

Nope! Sadly almost everything made today is disposable and it's a roll of the dice whether you get a good one or a bad one. Your's is a 6G (this is the 5G forum) so at least you'll have the updated transmission.:bandit:

Different transmission, 10R60 vs 10R80.

The 10R60 is smaller and lighter than the 10R80, supposedly improving fuel economy and shifting better.

Though the one I drove with the V6/10R60 was just as clunky and indecisive as my 10R80

Also note that the new Explorer no longer puts the 10R60 into the Hybrid or Police versions.

They went back to the 10R80.

And like Dave said, ALL the manufacturers are putting out junk now.

Maybe you'll get a good one, maybe not.

I had a 1996 Ranger SCAB that's probably still on the road today (somewhere) if it was well maintained. That thing was reliable. They were built to last back then. Of course,,, there was a different corporate mindset back then. Today,,, the trucks are built to break. "Planned Obsolescence". Look it up on YouTube.
I love my 2022 Ranger... but I also know it's a ticking time bomb. My 1996 would definitely outlast any truck built since 2015.

It's so sad that it was destroyed before it could reach 600k.

My 2g, 3G, and 4g, were all very reliable and I hung onto the 4g while waiting patiently for Ford to bring the Ranger back to NA. I traded my 2001 in on my 2019 and during the 18 years and 200,000 kms I drove it, there were a few annoying replacements - rusted fuel filler neck, corroded brake line, 4x4 selector module/relay, master cylinder, lower ball joints, wheel bearings/hub assembly. Never a powertrain issue and I was able to easily do all the work myself.

So far, no issues with my 5g Ranger except a bad battery - the new one is five years old and still fine. Will my 2019 last as long without powertrain issues? We’ll see? Will your 6g? Time will tell. However, all the warranty issues the Big 3 have these days doesn’t instil confidence.

Extended warranties have likely never sold as well as they have in the last five or ten years.

Very sad to hear of your poor Ranger is toast. One of My babies...I made sure that we put the customer first and our team made sure we did the right thing to not just cost reduce and sacrifice reliability. Sad that today's Rangers are not on the same path as my babies were... I see many of them around here...some long in the tooth but still on the road!

Things have sure changed in the past 23 years since I retired...

best,
Phil

Phil, You done good!

I've owned a used 98 model and drove it for 5 years before giving it to my Dad who had it 10 years, I then gave it to his care taker who used it on her farm for years until she passed on. My 2005 is a wonderful truck. Perfect in its simplicity and focus on function and reliability. A testament to the engineering team.

I think Ford lost something when the last generation of workers retired. I know a lot of corporations have, including where I spent my career at IBM. They are a shell of of what they were. Only 30K US employees now, and that number is rapidly shrinking. The transformation from a US company to an Indian company is almost complete. Soon the only location left in the USA will be the Corporate HQ in Armonk, NY.

IBM will have an Indian workforce 300,000 strong (it is already at 250,000), with 500-1,000 corporate execs in the NY HQ. The CEO and many executives are almost all Indian Nationals now.

We are witnessing the decline of American Greatness.

The sad thing is they know exporting all our labor to the third world results in significantly worse quality, they simply do not care. They cannot help themselves when they hear the siren’s call of saving 80%+ on wages. Wonderful for a short-term bump in the stock price and their bonuses. Kids these days graduating from good schools cannot find work, but they lie and tell you it’s “AI”. Or “nobody wants to work”. Americans cannot compete with H1B workers who will work for 1/4 a fair wage and be captive unable to quit their job or renegotiate wages without being deported, hence these horror stories of 10+ H1B workers crammed into one apartment, etc. But the truth is nobody cares at all at the top level of our politics, D or R, and this trend will continue until the bottom falls out or people have had enough.
