Last automatic I owned was a C4 3 speed & don’t know what’s normal with 10R80 10 speed. Reading about problems here in the forum now every hard shift and whining noise is causing me 10R80 paranoia! And dread dealing with TSB 24-2046
My psychologist says just remember when you were a kid and had a 3 speed bike, then you got a 10 speed and how happy you were, Ahhhhh yeah,So I’m all right now.

No point in worrying about something you cant change. Keep up on maintenance. Im doing oil changes every 5000 miles and ill be changing trans fluid every 30,000. Checking fluid levels once a week. If transmission dies young it wont be because of a lack of maintenance. All newer rigs seem to be having more and more problems. Just more shit on them to break i guess.

This is what I'm doing with my my truck and if something happens oh well I did my part to keep it up and running and now it's Ford,s problem.

Love that jam!
I like the Kinks but this is just "All day and all of the night" with different lyrics but I guess it isn't plagiarism if it is already your own song.

I posted this in a different thread, but maybe someone here might find some value in my experience with the “10R80 Paranoia”.

FWIW, I had noticed a very random clunky shifting on mine when it got a bit cold as well. Had it in for a routine service the other day and mentioned the Ford TSB 24-2046, which I learned from another thread. They checked the transmission and although no codes were found, they did what was called for in the TSB, which I think was a reprogram. I have not experienced anymore clunky shifting so far and transmission seems to be smoother. Dealership did not charge me for the TSB update. Might be worth it to look into this for some of you.

Well, initially I tried to because I just needed an oil change, but when I mentioned the clunky transmission and the TSB on it, they said they wanted to keep it and would likely need to keep it possibly overnight. Surprisingly though, they only kept it 1/2 a day so it was a fairly quick turn around. They seemed to be well versed on the TSB. Knock on wood, so far I have not experienced any more clunky shifting, but I guess time will tell. Happy with it so far.

I called in last week to ask about fluid change because of the clunkiness and they said they do transmission flushes around 60k miles but he said they would drive it on around to see what it's doing. I'm not fan of getting a flush though so I haven't took it. But since you mentioned the tsb, i may bring that up when I get it looked at.

I can't really tell anymore, if I let it warm up a little before i drive, It's not doing it as much.

Yeah, maybe that’s why they could not duplicate the problem. They were looking for “Klumky” instead of “Clunky”. While she was struggling to figure out how to spell “Clunky”, I was gonna suggest “Rough”, but then thought, no, they might look for “Ruff” shifting instead.

My psychologist says just remember when you were a kid and had a 3 speed bike, then you got a 10 speed and how happy you were, Ahhhhh yeah,So I’m all right now.
Then I went back to a 6 speed 100 hp motorcycle and couldn't get the smile off my face for a year. Don't worry, be happy and everything will be all right.

I remember racing a kid with my Huffy Spyder 5 with a banana seat. I figured I would start in 2nd or 3rd gear because I knew I could really get it going hitting 4th or 5th. Unfortunately the playground was way too short to hit the higher gears, and I lost! But I loved that bike!

Banana seat...I remember my friend had a sweet crazy bike with a steering wheel and shift knob...it was beautiful...until he tried ramp jumping it...that messed him up...then it got crushed while he was stopped at a train track and the gate counter weight came down on the bike...what a maroon...

I got really worried, took it to the dealership. They flashed the transmission and it fixed the bucking and jerking, especially on downshifts. The 3-4 gear delay is still there, but everything else went back to normal.

Here's my take, sure there might be problems that happen, but this transmission is in the Ranger, Mustang, F150, and Expedition. As far as I have been able to discern in reading and spec sheets, the mechanical bits are the same for the 10speed in the Colorado/Canyon, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Camaro, Sierra, anything GM with the 10speed. Only differences being electronics as Ford designed the transmission for the 10speed and GM designed the transmission for the 8 speed and they both took each others units and put it in their respective vehicles. So it appears to be a pretty massively used transmission. That doesn't mean ours won't have problems as Ford builds the ones for Ford and GM builds the Ford design for the GM units, but it gave me a big breath of fresh air that if the Cops can pound that transmission into the ground, I am probably ok for a long time driving mine like a grampaw.
It will eventually go out if you have that delay already.

True, but all transmissions eventually die. Will mine die tomorrow? Probably not. Will it die before I sell the truck? Probably. Will it be the only thing I have to replace before I'm finished with this truck? Definitely not. I've put 32k miles in 3 years. Hoping for another 168k miles out of the truck before it kicks the bucket.

While the 10 speed was a joint design project between GM and Ford, the internals are far from interchangeable. Even the transmissions between the Ranger, Mustang, F150 and other uses have some differences. Mainly in the clutches, things like number of disks. And yes, GM and Ford did their own programming, which is probably model specific also. So, direct comparisons can only VERY generally be made. But, it is true the Ford 10 speed has been and is out there for a while in hundreds of thousands of vehicles. It does seem to have some weaknesses that are just showing up, on a few of them. Hopefully Ford will step up and correct them.

Full disclaimer: I have a 2019 XLT FX4 with 34K. I have had NO issues with my transmission. It is a little rough on the first shifts on a cold morning if I don't let it warm up a little. Mine does NOT lug in town, I do know what lugging sounds and feels like, I have driven standards all my life. I have the FitzStick dip stick and plan on the PPE Pan when I change the fluid and filter a 35K. I do not believe the Ford recommended interval of 150K is reasonable for longevity.
