As a semi-new HAM (obtained tech license back in '17). It's absolutely nuts how elitist & rude a fraction of the HAM community are. It's a shame that such a small vocal minority of a hobby group can be such trolls for newcomers.

Unfortunately since I don't get Presidents day off, I was unaware of the holiday; and the traffic that entails at J Tree from it. Camped out at the BLM outside the park where it was quiet.

Hey Greg, I would do some local googling for "Makerspaces" These are typically educational STEM-based non-profits that have free or very cheap access to 3D printers.
For example, the local library in my town Huntington Beach, allows free filament for projects that take less than 2 hours...
So I was recently at "Overlandswap" hosted in Long Beach, CA (west side industrial park). Met a dude named Leif who owns a company called Enduro Campers. They are in the same market space as GFC for wedge campers. Slightly more expensive, but based on the specs, much better insulation...

That is probably the only downfall of that state. There are some cool offroad trails near SPI & Brownsville on the gulf; but otherwise, most is privately owned :(
