It's been my experience that Scotchguard in the red can works as advertised. Do a deep cleaning on whatever you're going to protect. Test it on a hidden area to make sure that it doesn't discolor the fabric then apply per the directions on the can. Don't be afraid of using too much. As long as...

I had one in my Wrangler and it was very handy.
I did the same thing. When I applied the shims, I applied them where I put the clamps. One on the top edge of the rail and one on the bottom edge directly below it.
