Although the Ranger performed well in the IIHS and NHTSA collision tests including roof strength, it did fair quite poorly in NHTSA rollover risk test compared to the other midsized pickups. Both 2WD and 4WD CC models earned 3 stars with the 2WD version having a 29.2% (very close to 2 stars) rollover risk and 4WD having a 25.6% risk. Neither model tipped up so that is a good thing. Considering the track width on the Ranger is slightly narrower then it’s competitors it probably explains the results.

To put these figures in perspective the other midsize trucks all earned 4 stars (below 20%) except for the Chevy Colorado which earned 3 with the 4WD having a 21.2% risk and the 2WD having a 21.9% risk. Also it is worth noting the rollover risk of these trucks is lower then the 1st generation Explorer SportTrac (01-05), but higher then the 2nd gen. (07-10). Also the 2019 Ranger 4WD is slightly lower then the 2011 Ranger 4WD was, but the 2019 Ranger 2WD is significantly higher then the 2011 Ranger 2WD. I’m guessing ride height has a lot to do with that. Generally if ride height is similar then a 4WD will have a lower center of gravity because it carries more weight down low.

Of course technology like AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control helps a lot compared to the old Rangers which were notorious for being tippy. Well to be honest that whole old “Yuma” platform Ranger and Explorer were notorious for that. I just share this info though because one should keep these things in mind if you want to drive your Ranger like a sports car. :)
