I actually got a chance to use both when we went up to Sedona last month. It's all uphill from the valley (1000'-5000') and a lot of hilly terrain once there. I run sport mode around town quite a bit but I noticed too that through the hills I got a little better mpg's which I think is because it's not lugging through the gears in drive.

There's a few smaller towns we went to with some pretty steep inclines where I ran sport but manually shifted and really liked the way it handled because you can control your shifts. Drive seems fine when there's only a few rolling hills or smaller mountains but when you're in them for a good distance I think sport is the way to go. Plus it's more fun! :like:
I alternate between drive and sport, using drive in city conditions to improve mileage and sport on the freeway to increase responsiveness, just in case, even though its consistently higher RPM cost mileage. I also have noticed that the transmission in drive tends to hesitate in rolling or mountainous conditions, usually when accelerating. Sport will solve that problem, again with higher RPM and lost mileage.

I don't think I'm actually losing any mileage by using Sport in the city through the steep rolling hills though. If anything it's more efficient because it doesn't hesitate/lug before down shifting on each hill.

18.3 entirely city driving with lots of stoplights and stop and go. I do have a "heavy" foot. Haven't had it on the expressway yet for any length of time.

That's basically what I get in city driving. It only goes above twenty (20.7 lifetime) when I do my daily drives on the freeway to work, c. 30 miles each way, with cruise control on for most of that.

Just put some aggressive snow tires on I'll let everyone know what effect it has on mileage.

I will add i have 8500km (5200mi) and i do about 90% city. I average 15-16mpg. (15L/100km). Its pretty bad. Unless you totally drive like miss daisy, the fuel consumption is pretty heavy. I have 0 towing in that 8500km. 500lbs in the truck bed with a canopy flush with roof. For comparison my 2018 Ford explorer sport with way more power averages 17mpg and i drive it way harder. If i drive it like i drive the ranger i can easily get 20+. Something about this small motor, too much turbo'ing. I also notice off reds the transmission shifts at 3500rpm to the next gears unless im very light on the gas. Seems like thats where my fuel is going. Just as a warning to future purchasers!

Drove to see family yesterday and after spending 3.5 hours on the road, I noticed that on flat roads with no head winds, my instant milage would suddenly, and for no apparent reason, drop from 27-30 MPG to 19-20 MPG. My cruise was set at 70 MPH every time and again, totally flat road with no head winds. A/C was (obviously) off. I'm not sure what's going on but something was definitely drawing the mileage down.

I'm sure the winter blend is to blame but the random 10 MPG jumps in instant mileage while cruising at 70 worries me...

Similar here. I drive 20 miles one way to work everyday on the highway. If I was going my usual 75 I would be lucky to get 18, going 70 has bumped that up to 19/20 range.

Pretty hilly where I live though, so probably has something to do with it. Also, truck is too damn fun to drive, I fucking love that turbo, so I'm sure my driving habits aren't the best.

Hills really kill the MPGs for sure. And the turbo fun factor makes getting good MPG harder. :)

When I go hiking, I'm typically going from like 500' to about 4000' or so. When I get to the trailhead, my tank MPG is usually 15-17. By the time I come back down, it is back up to 18 or 19 since most of the way back down I'm just coasting.

I'm hovering around 20 MPG for my combined driving.

Guys, I'm at c. 4,000 miles and averaging 20.3; that's down from an all-time personal best of 20.8. It has been trending down since the cold weather set in and the Ford Performance leveling kit got installed. Also, I find that I am using "Sport" or "Superman" mode more, and leaving Auto Stop/Start on less. Another culprit is obviously what Rob calls the "Turbo Fun Factor," which is hard to resist. Oh, well, as long as it does not fall below 20 MPG....
