I was searching thru the owners manual this morning, and saw this interesting note:

Note: The oil consumption of new engines
reaches its normal level after approximately
3,107 mi (5,000 km)

I wonder what that means? "Oil consumption of new engines"? Does that infer that a new engine needs to soak up some oil or it will burn some oil for the first 3,107 miles? The other interesting thing is the mileage figure - that is VERY specific.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Yes, new and rebuilt engines tend to use some oil while the rings, etc. get broken in. And they will continue to use oil after that point, but at a much slower rate. The miles quoted isn't really that specific as they said "approximately 5000 km" which is a pretty rounded figure. Only in converting to miles does it look specific.

That makes sense. The rest of the world uses km, so the engineers probably specified it in km, and the the conversion to miles looks "weird" because it is so specific.

I don't ever recall seeing notes about new engines using oil while they are breaking in, but maybe I just never noticed it before.

What's interesting is that strongly suggests that it takes ~5000 km for the engine to break in. Which sounds reasonable....

So I guess that implies you should check your oil level frequently for the first 5000 KM in case you need to add oil? lol

Is the factory fill a Motorcraft 5w30 synthetic blend or full Synthetic?

About the "3107", the April edition shows 3000. I guess Ford got a lot of questions about that particular value. Kind of impressive, actually, that someone at Ford thought it was update worthy.

Those who write these manuals for a living have to justify their jobs.

The devil's in the details (not that 3000 versus 3107 is an important detail).

Has anyone noted any significant oil consumption? Mine has barely budged at 7k, probably gone down a little from checking it all the time.

I have anxiety from my 07 Wrangler which to me has excessive but “manufacturer acceptable” oil consumption since about 25k miles. Combined with the undercarriage rust I hate the thing now.

An oil burner is the worst, a leaker is bad too. Hoping this motor stays oil tight.

It is a conversion to miles specifically. I have had many complaints about the State Side Vehicle Engineering Manager that shirked his/her responsibility to read the owners manual page for page. Helm does the manual draft and it is always full of errors. The Vehicle Engineering Manager is responsible for the accuracy of the manual and he/she dropped the ball big time in my opinion. Stupid to spec such a specific number when a nice reasonable number of 3000 miles would have made sense.
