I recently had the dealer do my first oil change and tire rotation at 5k. I thought I might as well use the ford pass rewards points. BTW, I took it into the dealer service instead of their quick lane. The next day, after someone told me my truck leaked oil in their driveway I checked my garage and found oil as well. I put it up on ramps and found they dumped the oil on the skid plate and left it and didn't wipe out the filter funnel. Is this a common practice for a dealer change with these trucks? Anyone else have these issues?

I guess this is what I should expect from a free oil change.

It's definitely common practice. Having worked in a Quick Lane shop I have witnessed many lazy "techs" not work with best practice techniques. Even though you took it to the main shop that doesn't mean it was worked on by a main shop tech.

Like Idaho said, I would bring it to the attention of the service manager. They usually will have it brought back and cleaned up.

Man that sucks... what a bummer. I'm not a fan of these 'free service" deals. The quality of the technicians you get that work on your truck are, well, let's just say free service is worth the price of admission.

Did you by chance read on-line reviews for the shop you took it to? The dealer we bought our Ranger from has a Facebook page and Holy Schnikeys.... it's truly unbelievable how simple maintenance items can be done so horribly wrong.

If it's something I can do... I do it just to avoid such issues.

Here's an example:

"Might I add that I have had my oil changed at this dealership for the last 7 years. Recently, I took advantage of a discount offered by a local independent mechanic--first time in 7 years. He informed me that someone had stripped the plug on my oil pan, and that they would need to find something to fit the oil pan or I would be out around $600 for a new one. I chose to have them rectify the situation. I informed (the dealership) of this, and they basically told me "it happens over time." No offer to make good on their work or make their customer happy. I would never recommend this service department to anyone!!! Nor would I purchase a new vehicle from them."

Same exact thing happened to my fathers F-150. He took it to the dealer for an oil change and the next morning there was a line of oil in the driveway. They didn't bother to clean up when they were done. Lucky it isn't a concrete driveway, blends in alright with the asphalt.

My dad offered to change the oil for an older woman from his church. He couldn't believe how difficult it was to get the oil plug to budge. Once he finally got it out, he figured out why it was so stuck: the tech at the shop she had taken it to for her last oil change had put Lock-Tite on the threads.

But the worst oil change story I've heard is a family friend who took her car in for a change at a tiny small-town shop, and the engine failed not long after. Shop denied anything to do with it for a little while, but eventually (after a couple other mechanics looked at it and lawyers got involved) were forced to admit that one employee had drained the oil then left it for a bit, and then another employee moved the oil-less car to get it out of his way.

It's because of anecdotes like this that I'm like you: if it's something I can do, I do it.

Here was my response from the dealer. I am satisfied that it was a training issue. Stuff happens. The question is will I get lured in again by the free oil change or just do it myself?

" Thank you reaching out to Bill concerning the oil residue issue on your new Ranger that we serviced last week. I have meet with the Technician and showed him the picture and reviewed the proper way of draining out the oil and filter to eliminate this in the future. If you have time to come by bring your Ranger into Bill and we will clean any remaining residue left, and we will perform your next oil change at no charge for your inconvenience. Please reach out to Bill or myself if we can do anything further."

Lack of pride in their work, plain and simple.

Ford offers freebies such as this to drum up business for a dealership, one would think that they would put their best foot forward, but in your case I am sure you have doubts of the quality of their work because of this situation.

It's an established fact that if a consumer is satisfied with a product or service he/she may tell 2 people, if dissatisfied they'll tell 8.

At least dealer management was gracious about it though..

That was a good response I feel by the dealer. It sucks, but it happens. Most of the time you'd get blown off or they'd deny it. I'd give them another chance if you're not able to do it yourself.

We are ALL on the same page here, I'm not going to repeat all my 'bad service' rants from Ford, Dodge, Jeep & pvt shops over the years from my other recent threads...
Bottom line they [tech's] are pushed for car-count, billable hours etc. Some care and ignore the suits, others rush and do the best they can and still others dont give a flying Fu#k. I toss out the free LOF coupons, the dealerships always call/email or both and I explain why I refuse to let anyone besides me or my son do basic service we are comfortable with. Everytime I make an exception I'm disappointed to some degree: over/under filled, stuff loose, pools of oil, cap left off, dirty interior...list is un-ending. Like a lot of you I just care about my toys I work hard for and dont want it to look like a $hit Show..

The first position I held at a Lincoln-Mercury dealer here was the 'lube' man back in 1976, I got paid all of three tenths of an hour (18 minutes) for an oil change, greasing the chassis added a whopping two tenths, for a total of half an hour work credit.
The pay structure was based on flat rate, if for an 8 hour day I only did 10 oil changes/chassis lubes I would of amassed just 5 hours paid work for the day.
This lasted amazingly for 4 months, after that I became a line mechanic and did so for 13 years, 6 months.I begged my boss to get away from that job. I can share some true horror stories of working on defective brand new cars, such was Ford's quality control back then.
Even then, I never let a customers vehicle leave my stall with oil dripping from it.

even though i'm in my sixties i've decided to change the oil myself. It's not that hard really, i have my own ramps and catch basin but the design of this vehicle and getting at the filter etc is a pain in the azz. I don't do any off roading so i just leave that skid plate off. Synthetic all the way every 10,000 kms
