I get that. That's why (hanging cords)I put USB outlets in the tray, mostly for my GPS.
My phone mostly stays in my pocket.
I also installed USB outlets inside the console in case a phone needs charged.
There are so many things which can be done with a phone nowadays that I'm sure I don't know the half of it!

Ford, IMO, placed the full function interface USB port in the wrong place in my STX.
That area would hold a phone nicely as long as the port is not in use, but I like it for a flash drive full of music which is right in the way for most any other use at the same time. I think it should be off to one side which would allow my phone to rest in that area and still use the flash drive.
On my last truck, I simply screwed a suitable phone holder to the dash, but it had hardwired hands free and no bluetooth.
I have an stx and the port is perfect. Put the phone on the right side of the port, with the phone charging port facing you or up.....

The chord is plugged into USB port, coiled up, with just enough left to reach phone port.

No wires hanging. Phone aint goin anywhere.

There is more room to the right anyways.

I can see how that would work great.
Thing is, that port is the only one which can be used for a flashdrive.
My phone gets charged while I sleep, so I seldom need to charge it in the truck
which is a good thing 'cause if I put my phone in the console I'll leave it in the truck.:giggle:

Also notice I said that the the USBs in the dash tray are mostly for my GPS.
When I use it, the application is a lot like you do with your phone...
Short charge cord coiled on the GPS stand and plugged in at the tray,..no wires hanging.

Things are changing fast and I may use bluetooth or some other source for music.
You might even use your phone through that port for your music?
Someone here even showed a flashdrive which only sticks out a fraction of an inch.
I may even end up using my port the same way you do!:like:

nice job with the GPS.

Yeah, only 1 port is the booger in the design...not location.

I will end up adding a USB in tray as you did, or in the console at some point

Been enjoying IOS 13 here too. Had one of these in my Audi and ordering one for the Ranger.
Did the call volume for phone calls while connected through Apple Carplay improve with iOS13? It's a reported/wide-spread problem that there is a significant volume delta on both ends when connected to Apple Carplay with SYNC3, so frustrating!

I updated to the iOS 13 2 nights ago, the Apple Carplay phone volume problem did not improve. It also didn't improve with turning off the voice noise cancellation as suggested in another thread. When just connected to SYNC3 bluetooth, the call volume works as it should. I don't know why Apple Carplay is not working right on the new Rangers, it was perfect in my '17 F-150 Limited that I just traded in for my '19 Magnetic FX4 Lariat Ranger.

How did you manage to get your charging cable hidden like that?!
Sorry been offline for a while. I removed the ac vent between the steering wheel and center console and ran the usb cord down towards the floor. The vent pops right off. I then snaked the cord underneath the dashboard towards the USB port. Make sure you leave yourself enough cord to reach to where your phone will be placed. If you look closely, you can squeeze the cord between the top of the console and the bottom of the dash board top. When you have the right amount of cord to reach the phone, just stuff the excess cord in the space where the vent goes. Be careful to not pinch the cord with the vent clips when pop it back in. Hope that helps.

Personally I feel it's a bit too high on the dash. I ended up using a magnet holder that holds itself to the fan blades :)

It sits pretty much perfect for me this way, not blocking anything in my view yet high enough to easily view it when using navigation on it. It's out of the way of my passengers as well. The left/right fan blades still move too.

I have the small screen in an XL , my spouse has the whole touch screen in her Ford. That system was frustrating for me .

I do use the Google Maps and Pandora on my phone and it sets in the passenger seat most of the ti,e.

I am looking for a mount that is solid but not damaging to my trim.

I am going to try mu RAM vacuum mount on the glass and let you know how it works out.

So I'm looking for a good mount for the upper tray area. I wanted to find a nice sturdy weighted mount but found this basic clip mount and decided to give it a shot. It hasn't arrived yet but it looks decently promising. It doesn't hurt that the color looks like it'll match perfectly.

Ok, here's an update. I totally ditched the fancy looking gray mount and picked up a Ram X Grip and I'm totally happy with it. I have a Galaxy S9+ and got the plus phone/phablet size mount and it fits perfectly with the OtterBox case.
