Today ford called me and we had a great conversation about the truck. The buyback process has begun and I’ll know results in a day or two. Will keep everyone updated. So far ford customer service has been really nice!!

Buyback process?? This has me a little concerned as this 3rd-4th shifting issues is exactly what I’ve been experiencing. Did Ford determine any specific problem to initiate a buyback or did you just decide you’d rather not deal with the fix?

I’m at 8500 miles and have thought all along that the truck downshifts a bit rough but nothing too crazy. About 2 weeks ago the shifting noticeably got rougher though, up and down, with 3rd-4th really having issues. Does seem worse on initial drives but it doesn’t seem to go away completely even after longer drive times. Oddly, I only started trying Sport mode in “manual” about this time (had used “auto” sport plenty before). It’s almost as if my playing with shifting manually confused the transmissions learning or something. Could that even be possible?

I’m setting up my first oil change at the dealer this week and have really been stressed out about bringing this up and how go about getting it checked out.

They have attempted a fix 3 different times and nothing has addressed it. There was one time I was almost rear ended because of the hesitation. In the state of Florida I can now go through the lemon law process or giving them a chance to buy it back. I would much rather not have to go through the lemon law process due to how long it would take. I should be getting a call today or tomorrow about what they say.

From what I was told the transmission is not the problem but the computer that controls it? I am unsure. And yeah 3 attempts, one being at 1600ish miles, another at 5500ish, and another at 5800ish. I have all the numbers and experience with the vehicle written down and everything is documented.

The last time it was in the transmission specialist said that the keeper memory being wiped would help it, which it didn't for long. Sorry if i don't 100% keep this updated but I have everything down. Was kinda looking for anyone else having the issue and what they have done or gone through but it looks like that isn't the case yet. When I started the thread it was the 3rd attempt.

I also have a focus from 2013 and we all know how bad those issues were but it was "the way it was made" and that's had the clutch replace 3 times since owning. So I am not going to sit on another possible problem while making payments and continue to be unhappy due to the feel I'm getting from the transmission or whatever is causing it. All I know is they have had their chance and they obviously can't figure it out. All they have done is messed with updates and stuff on the computer, but its been 3 documented attempts.

What exactly did they try? As I’ll be attempting to have the same issue handled at my dealer it would be good to know.

As for the danger in the lurching shifting, since you mentioned almost getting rear-ended, I had a rough downshift buck me while cornering on to an on ramp last week. It scared me enough in that situation that I haven’t driven without it (the shifting issue) on my mind sense.

Can’t exactly say I’m happy you found me but I’ll keep you updated. Should be taking mine in on Wednesday.

The first time was the TSB update for trucks made prior to Feb 15th I think, which solved the rough idle i had as well as the rough shifting. Through the summer I noticed the rough idle coming back and the harsh 4th gear hesitation and delay as well so I took it back and they updated the computer, no TSB or anything, just an update. Whatever they did solved the rough idle but not the rough shift. So attempt 3 they had for 4 days (no loaner vehicle given) and they wiped the keeper memory on the computer and they were able to think that fixed it after they drove it. So now I feel the rough shift around 4th again. So this time I contacted ford Customer care.

Update, spoke with the representative tonight. They are going to review further and get back to me in the next couple days.

I’ve noticed that when I’m driving around 20mph that my truck shifts rough from 3rd to 4th, then settles into 5th. Once the truck is in 5th is seems to run pretty rough shaking the cab. Is this the same issue?

I have a similar situation with the 3rd to 4th shift. Reduced power and sometimes stutters before 4th. Like it's trying to decide if it wants to shift. A noticeable lurch at times on the shift, more with a cooler engine.
5th isn't so bad.

The TSB fixed this issue for me but every once and a while, it seems to return. It's like the boost cuts off and the engine revs but nothing happens. it's brief, of course, and once I've driven for just a 1/4 mile or so, it never returns until the engine gets cold again. I'm holding off until my next service date before I make a thing of it.

As the weather gets colder in my area I think I've noticed something similar. On cold take offs it's a hard shift around 4th gear and only happens once.

I experience the same issue. Only on a cold start. Hesitation/jumpy going from 3rd to 4th. Smooth shifting all other times. Brought it to the dealer and they said there is nothing wrong.
