Upsized Oil Filter Thread

So from my snazzy research I've determined that its an FL-910 oil filter. In prior vehicles I have swapped that for an FL-400s (or Mobil1 equivalent) which allows you to put a little less than half a quart more oil in.

With this being a weirdly placed filter, I was wondering if there is enough room between the existing filter, and whatever else is behind it?

Anyone change their oil yet? If it's 5.7quarts, you can safely put in 6 quarts with the upsized filter.

Also anyone seen a relocation kit for this engine yet? I'd like to not have to squeeze into the wheel well to change the oil (I live on several miles of dirt road).

Confirmed itā€™s 6.2. Changed my oil today, piece of cake.
Yeah, it was 5.7 to 6.0 quarts in the Focus 2.0T, put it right on full, now that could be that .2 was left over from the last change, but IDK.


Also looking for the Mobil 1 Filter, so far it looks like M1-209 or M1-211, but not sure which I will end up using.

The bypass pressure rating is not the same on the FL-910(14.5 psi) as it is on the FL-400(20 psi).

Just by going figuring the volume to ounces of the filter with out taking into consideration the filter media space.
Fl 400 is 16 oz while the FL 910s is 14.6. All based on outside dia. About 1.4 oz difference. I don't know if the filter media is
the same size or any other internal components. Need to cut open one of each new to see.

Thinking more about it , what I am going to do is measure how much oil to fill a FL 400 and do the same for the FL 910S. I use the FL 910S on my lawn equipment. I just have to get a FL 400.

FL400s fits, it was a PITA to get the original off, I think they had a gorilla tighten them off the line.

I initially filled with 6.5Q, then added about another .25Q after running the engine for about 2 minutes and letting it sit for 15 minutes. The oil line was about 1/4" below the full mark until the extra .25 went in.

So about 6.75q brings you close to the full mark. I think 7 would go in, but it's too new to try that kind of stuff yet.

4800 miles on the ODO.

Just did my first change, so Iā€™ll share some thoughts, no particular order.

  • Wix 1516 (itā€™s the cross for the FL-400s) fits quite comfortably. There are zero issues with fitment, it doesnā€™t rub the shield or anything.
  • I pulled the wheel off since it was my first time. I would agree with what most are saying: itā€™s not required but it does make it nicer to work. Do it with your tire rotations.
  • 6.5 qts got me to the full mark.
  • The filter drain trough wasnā€™t where I thought it was! Thereā€™s another trough forward, roughly on the wheel centerline. The one we want for the filter is behind the sway bar. I got an arm full of oil.
  • 15mm wrench for skid plate and drain bolt.
  • My factory filter wasnā€™t overly tight. I didnā€™t have the right filter wrench on hand so a pair of channel locks got it off no problem.
  • If youā€™re the I-donā€™t-need-no-stinkin-funnel type, stand down and buy a funnel. The oil fill hole is quite a bit smaller than other Fords lately.
