1978 F-150 I bought in 1995 ... after the 1979 GMC I bought in 1994 rotted away ?

I swapped the straight six for a junkyard 302 ... which promptly blew a head gasket so I sold it.

Hi Rooster,

The 300 straight six was bulletproof. Not much power for sure through the log style intake manual and Carter 1BBL carburetor. Fuel distribution was so poor at idle you could pull the #1 and #6 spark plug and the idle rpm would barely change...

The over 8500 HD version of the 300 had a forged steel crankshaft that weighed almost the same as a complete 302 motor.... (not really but heavy for sure!).

Best,

Hi Phil,
That straight six sure was reliable ... my downfall was I picked up a copy of Ford Performance at the local speed shop, which I still have to this day, and got inspired. Although my 302 project didn't survive much past the shakedown runs and wasn't built like the engines in this book, it was a good time.

This book has an amazing amount of information from the various small block heads available to building a race ready 351 Cleveland.

I didn't know they dropped the 5L into a Ranger. I knew you could get the 4.0L one year only.
You could get the 4.0l more than one year. I had it in my 2002 and 2005 Rangers. My first, 2000 Ranger had the 3.0l and it just didn't seem like quite enough. I liked the 4.0l a lot better.

The V8 was my own take on what Ford should have done. Tried hard to make the conversion as OEM looking as I could.

Ford did 2 different 4.0 V6's in the Ranger. The earlier OHV/pushrod was under powered but nearly bullet proof, the later SOHC had a poor timing chain system. Had similar power to the 5.0, but a fraction of the longevity.

It wasn't my first car but I had that 78 Fiesta. Mine wasn't as fancy as yours. It was $4080 OTD new in 78. I drove it like a go cart.

My 1st 1959 Ford (like this one). It was my Dad's beater. And it was beat before I got it.

My first real car. It drank more oil than it did gas. But, damn it was fun.

The one I wish I would have kept. (Not mine, but same color)

The one I have on order. Now, if Ford will just build the dang thing. :) Same trim, same color.

First car 57 Chevy, hiding behind that young fellow. Picture from 1969 or 1970. First new car, 73 Nova, orange and black kind of appropriate for this close to Halloween. Now. Somehow 50 years slipped past between that old Chevy and the new ranger. ;)

I was thinking of putting the 5.0 in my 98 ranger but im going with the 2.8 Cummins instead. I have seen quite a few 5.0 rangers for sale tho ?

First Ranger was a 2007 XL, great 7' bed, indestructible all-vinyl interior, no carpet, roll-up windows, and no mechanical issues ever! Now a drive a 2020 Magnetic XLT Super Crew

FIrst car was a 64 1/2 Mustang (sadly, it had the small-block 170ci 6 cylinder engine, not the 289). Bright red and looked fast, but . . .

After spending most of my life in under-powered (but cheap) vehicles by Volkswagen (multiple minibuses) and Honda (Civic Wagon, CR-V, Element), I got my first Ford vehicle (a new Explorer Limited) in 2014. We loved the Explorer but, when the time came for a change, we decided to upgrade to something more capable, more elevated, and, mostly, more fun! Here is my last look at our beloved Explorer, parked on the dealer's lot next to the new (2019) Ranger so that I could move all my junk over more easily. Out with the old (sob!), in with the new (rah!). I don't plan on parting with my Lariat anytime soon--unless Ford brings the Ranger Raptor to the States!

We traded our '07 Explorer (excellent vehicle) for the '19 XLT Sport S Crew. No tears shed, but was a little apprehensive to do it. Turned out to be a good choice. Both are great vehicles and daily drivers. Looking forward to a couple of decades in my Ranger!

This was my last Ranger. 2011 XLT/4X4/4.0 with a towing package. Late model Leer camper shell. Outstanding condition inside and out, meticulously serviced and maintained. 43,000 miles when traded in on the 2020. Very, very reluctant to let it go but extremely pleased overall with the 2020, especially the quality!
