I test drove a 2019 Ranger in early August and I have owned my 2020 Ranger since mid December. I don't remember the brake pedal feel or travel being different between the two. The caveat for my experience is the time difference so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

No difference. Just picked up my 2020 FX4 to replace the 2019 XLT Sport the Ford bought back under the lemon law.

Both on my 19 & the 20 if you keep pressing down on the brake pedal it slowly goes down to the floor. To me it feels like there is air that has to be bled out.

its fairly unanimous among owners, the brake travel and resistance in the pedal stinks :frown:

Hi Folks,

You can make a minor improvement by bedding in your brake pads. This pad compound appears to flash gas and the bedding process will stop this. It is not a fix but an improvement...Search Brake bedding for the procedure...

I have not driven a 2019... but my 2020 brakes are not my favorite thing about the truck, that's for sure. After driving my 2018 Explorer and I get into my Ranger, The ranger brakes suck in comparison.

My 2020 Ranger with about 1,000 miles has brake travel/sponginess that I don't care for.

Hey Phil,

So you think when it comes time for a brake job, using a better brake pad may help things?

Thanks!

The only thing that worked for me was a big brake kit. There's an issue with the master cylinder to caliper ratio. Since I installed the BBK the pedal is more consistent, firmer, engages higher up and of course stops better.

Hi Anthony,

It certainly might help this a bit...may not significant gains...the problem with the current Ranger is helped by reducing the gassing that can occur when the pedal is depressed and initially the heat generates a "cushion of gas" that requires you to press harder...Just my guess, as I had the same concern and bedded in the brakes and it was noticeably better. This is just my opinion...I have no idea how to define better brakes. Poterfield metallic? Wonderful for racing but terrible for street... Brake compounds used are almost like witchcraft... What Ray did with aftermarket calipers etc increased the linearity of the the brakes... I really think the Engineers missed on brake linearity, and who in upper management signed off on this should be shot... It should never been released. I know who this was and this person is the most technically incompetent person I have had the unfortunate necessity with which to deal....only looking for the next promotion by meeting his targets not having the customer in his sights.

What most people are complaining about is the pedal feel. Not the actual stopping. Of course people are conflating the pedal feel with the actual stopping. The stopping is not bad but the feel of the pedal is garbage. The only thing everyone can hope for is enough people complain and Ford changes the master cylinder to match the calipers and get that ratio correct. I doubt that will happen. If you're willing to spend the money a BBK will fix the problem or you live with the terrible pedal feel.

In 3000 miles I haven't noticed anything unusual with my brakes. But after reading this I'm positive that the next time I hit that pedal I will gasp and go 'DAMN'! Thanks in advance for warning me about something I didn't have a problem with!
