I've had my ranger for less than 3 years, it just went over 30k miles and for the 3rd time I have a check engine light. 1st one was I think 1.5-ish years ago, something like moisture or something, can't quite remember but it resulted in needing an engine cover. Took a couple weeks to get it done. This last June it was "misfire". Had it all loaded for a camping trip then the light came on, took it to autozone and it showed the misfire reading. Couldn't get it in for over 3 weeks. Told them about the autozone diagnostic reading, actually gave them the printout. They clearly didn't trust the autozone opinion. A week later they said it needed a new sparkplug which was causing a misfire...really? Check engine light back on this morning, dealership can't take it in til 10/29. I called a different dealership farther away and they'll look at it next week. This has me worried that I made a mistake getting a Ranger, and worried that my warranty is up pretty soon. I'm wondering if I should get rid if it or go get an extended warranty.

What is the DTC code that you got before and what code do you have now? For a misfire code, I would pull the spark plug coils and look for moisture down in the spark plug wells. The DTC code will tell you which plug is misfiring, if in fact you have a misfire code.

If you were directed to get an engine cover, then that probably didn't entirely fix the water getting into the plug wells. You might have take other measures to redirect the water coming from below the windshield. There are threads about that on here somewhere.

What he said. You got water in the #4 plug well. The dealer added a cover because of this known issue. If they hadn't replaced the plugs along with adding the cover, there may be corrosion there.
IIRC, the engine cover isn't an end all to water getting in the plug well even direct it to another plug.

So what code did Autozone Show? P030?
The (?) will show which cylinder is misfiring, now since the plug was replaced and no mention of them replacing the COP or the Boot, and if this has had moisture (water) into that well. I would replace the Boot at minimum, but precautionary change the COP & Boot Assembly.
Known Water Intrusion wells are #4 and #1, depending on how you park the truck - Level or Nose Down.
There are other possibles for misfire such as - Injector, but most likely with the history of water in the wells - I suspect COP bad and or Boot has corrosion inside the boot (connection point to the plug)

Sounds like the original issue was never fixed properly, be careful if you try and remove the plugs, some have been known to break off from corrosion...

Yep, have seen many of those issues here, the cowling gap in the middle if you are exposed to a lot of rain

Thank you for all of the replies. I'm more irritated than worried, and I had downed a couple sodas by the time I vented on here lol. I took it to AutoZone the 1st time, not this time. I am going to bring up some of the points made here when I take it in. Thanks again!

I never updated this back in October, the check engine light went off before my appointment with the dealership, dealership said not to bother bringing it in. Last week (now I live in San Diego and warranty has expired) the light came back on. Made an appointment with local dealership but the day before appointment the light went off again. anyone have this happen?

Your dealer should still be able to read the DTC codes, even though the light is now off.

Get yourself a scanner, such as OBDLink MX+. I think it can read stored and pending codes.

Another update, took it in to Sedano Ford in La Mesa, Ca with check engine light on. Told it was a misfire. After a couple of days at the dealership I was told it was an injector and would be covered by the powertrain warranty. After the new injector was installed it still had a misfire. They can't figure out why and say they have involved a Ford engineer or whatever. Today is 2 weeks they have had my truck! has anyone had this kind of problem? Very frustrating!
