I found a dealer with practically new 2024 Lariat 2.7 FX4 that I think I can get for a reasonable price. I currently have a 2022 Tremor that I really like but the Lariat has some nice features plus the bigger engine. Aside from spending more money, is there a downside to the 2.7? I’ll drive it tomorrow to see how I like it, but on paper it’s pretty awesome.

Worse fuel economy.
2 turbos to fail
More cylinders to maintain
Tighter clearances under hood to work on it
Harder on transmission maybe?
Slightly heavier/less payload
Intake plumbing on the 2.7 looks like a puzzle

But its faster!

I'm no expert but I've been hearing a lot of negative things about the oil pump in the 2.7. It is apparently driven by a belt which isn't a great design honestly for such an important piece of the engine. The 2.3 has proven itself to be a pretty good engine - I'm not sure I'd consider the 2.7 an upgrade honestly.

I own a 2024 Ranger Lariat 2.7. I get 21 mpg combined city/hwy.
Over the years I have owned every domestic make a truck, this Ranger is the best truck I’ve owned. I disagree completely about the 2.7 having a bad reputation. The current generation has a very good reputation. My 2.7 is a combined port and direct fuel injection, twin turbos..it’s has great performance. I’m not a bit concerned about the turbos going out or with the oil pump going out. I believe most of the negative comments about the 2.7 are from guys who are driving the 2.3.

I got 24 MPG in my '21 STX RWD with the 2.3
I get 23 MPG in my '24 FX4 with the 2.7, better than some 5G 4x4's with a 2.3.

I too had questions about the wet belt oil pump. But seeing that it's been out since for 10 years in the 2.7 and 4 years in the 5.0, I don't see it is a problem. Plus, it's a Kevlar reinforced belt, not rubber like old school fan and alternator belts.

Just my opinion:
The 2.3L is a good engine. (Have you tuned yours yet?)
The tremor package is the best 5G you can get. (Tho I am a little bias 23’ MY ox white xlt tremor)
Of the lariat pkg all I really wanted it offered that the xlt didn’t was the headlights.
Personally the 24’ doesn’t look as good as the 5G.. but if you’re on the other side of the looks opinion then that would be a plus for you.
I’d go with a 2.3L 6G or just take the big bite and go RR..
The 2.7L v6 just ups your maintenance costs like dereku mentions…but doesn’t truly justify itself as a upgrade…
I’ve heard mixed reviews on the chassis being much better vs nothing new.
If you really want a big infotainment center.. I’d direct you to the T-style replacement to satisfy that desire.. (for me big screens belong on the wall at home ? and not in my truck.)
Again this is just my opinion.
If you really want the new body style and a V6TT.. and you don’t have to worry about towing anything over 4500lbs…
Why not just go with the top dog Ranger Raptor…
Inshort
Downsides besides costing more money.. it’s not a Ranger Raptor.
Price difference of a lariat 2.7 vs a RR is marginal.
More spark plugs to buy.
It’s a weird looking 6G ?.
Anyway…
Do whats gonna make you happiest….(which will obviously be to get a R.Raptor ?.)

True, cost between Lariat FX4 2.7 and Raptor is about 2525.
But cost difference between XLT FX4 2.7 and Lariat FX4 2.7 is almost 8K. IMO, there is nothing in a Lariat worth that extra 8K, making Raptor the better choice. But that was too much for me, so I opted for XLT FX4 with 2.7. Actually, FX4 is way more than I need, but it's what was available at the time.
