How do tow a travel trailer with hitch weight and stay within payload capacity? I am looking at several pretty light trailers but with the loaded hitch weight, I have next to nothing left for payload (Ranger Tremor). I have looked at multiple campers but for my towing range, hitch weight is killing my options due to my payload capacity. Any suggestions?

Not much you can do about it. There is no magic pill that will gain you payload capacity.

What are you looking at and what is the payload of your Tremor?

The door jamb sticker is your truth, whatever it is. I bought my ā€˜21 XLT SCAB with towing in mind. Payload 1826lbs. My tongue weight is 560lbs as I am typically loaded. That’s an actual measurement, not a manufacturer’s stripped down measurement. There’s two of us plus gear and a heavy Equalizer hitch. We take stuff, so we are under, but not by much. We only have a 5000lbs GWR trailer and don’t exceed our GCWR, but use most of it up. Our trailer is typically close to 4700lbs loaded. Our GCVWR is 12,100lbs. My truck has additions like tonneau, running boards, LineX, toolbox, mats, flaps, mirrors - you get the idea. That also all comes out of payload. It’s easy to find 3500 lbs trailers depending on what you want. If you are looking at small 7000lbs toy haulers, you will need a different truck.

As mentioned in another recent thread about a toy hauler, the empty weight of some trailers have a very high tongue weight, but when properly loaded may be within the specs of the Ranger. But, only way to know is by using scales. And while determining that, it may be best to rent a 3/4 ton truck to take the loaded trailer to the scales on and get the numbers first, then if they are good, you know you can switch to the Ranger.

FWIW bought an app from goggle store, (gvwr, $2) you put in all the relevant inputs and it rates the safety of your setup, safe, marginal and unsafe. I used it prior to buying my TT, however I don't recall that it considers things like trailer height , width and length, how you load , lots of variables involved in towing, I tow a nobo ar 4162 lbs and if anything sometimes wish it was lighter or smaller profile,1st time towing anything really heavy and overall it's a pia.

I think the app from Weigh Safe is free. It's geared toward their hitches where you can input an actual tongue weight from their built in scale, but you can select a non weight safe hitch estimate it to use as a second check tool. I'm sure if you select non weight safe hitch, they will show a link to buy one. But free useful too, is free useful tool.

we recently bought a used trailer. it is apx 3400 lbs dry weight. there are lots of nice trailers out there that the ranger can tow easily....you just need to set your expectations properly....ranger is a capable truck but it isn't an F350

I'm a big advocate of staying under the rated limits and having an adequate tow vehicle.

Today I picked up a Apex Nano, 25’, dry weight about 4,000. Towed it just over 400 miles. Ranger had enough torque but that short wheel base results in a rough ride and getting pushed around. The small gas tank is also a pain. Had many hours on the drive to consider upgrading to an F-150, but I sure do like my 2019 Ranger for everything but towing a travel trailer.
