Magnets in the trans pan?

I’m going to drop the stock pan and install a PPE pan and going to put a couple magnets in the pan and will glue them down. Anyone suggest what I can glue them down with? JB weld? Or? I’m also going to get the trans funnel from Mike to test it:clap:

Given all the problems some are having with their transmissions, I'd be scared to death to introduce anything else into that environment.

But I have no idea what I'm talking about most days, so there's that.

Be sure to follow up with what happens and what you find once you get them in there.

They have one in the filter and it’s a known problem with the metal particles getting into the solenoids and causing issues. I just wanted to get ahead of that with catching some more metal before it get into the filter.

They have one in the filter and it’s a known problem with the metal particles getting into the solenoids and causing issues. I just wanted to get ahead of that with catching some more metal before it get into the filter.

I thought these transmissions contained mostly nonferrous metals? If that is the case, I don't see how adding additional magnets to what is already there helping out much. Changing the fluid and filter more frequently would seem like the better option at face value, as it will help remove all the metal shavings regardless of their ability to be caught by a magnet.

The friction disks ride and clamp onto "steels" in between. I've seen enough sparkles in transmission pans to know that I want to drain that metal from the transmission and not force circulate them with with the shops "flush". I've yet to see a transmission magnet not completely covered in ferrous dust.

What about sticking a magnet on the oem pan with epoxy. If its a rare earth magnet it should work somewhat thru a plastic pan.

Changing the fluid and filter is the best way to go, as I understand the valve body tends to get a little sticky with particles. I had my fluid and filter changed at a shop, so I couldn't tell you if there were any particles on the magnet or not. The PPE pan also comes with a magnet on it, so adding an extra one with JB Weld seems pointless and possibly bad, as I do not know how JB Weld and ATF interact together. I know a mixture of ATF and acetone makes a great penetrating oil when mixed, but I may be overthinking this without the acetone half in transmissions. Either way, I stand by the idea of changing the fluid and filter more frequently as it removes most of the particles floating around in there whether they are attached to a magnet or not.

Disclaimer: It's your truck, you're an adult, do what you want.

Having said that, trying to glue magnets into an excellent aftermarket pan that already has a magnet with JB or whatever you're adding stuff that could circulate and jam up the trans, magnets that could bounce and wind up who knows where if they're not firmly affixed. Seems like a bad plan to me.

Spend the money on fluid and get good at doing drain and refill procedure every 25k and filter changes at the same time. Better plan.

The original JB Weld is pretty much inert once it sets..

I have not installed my PPE deep pan yet. I have several long 2.3" x 0.375" Neodymium bar magnets as well as quarter sized round one that I can attach with JB Weld to the base of my pan. After they have cured I'll cover the area with some old ULV I have in a jug and let it set up for a month or so.

I may lay 10 of them side by side to create area 2.3" x 3.75" They are only 3mm tall.

I'll get back with a picture or two when I have them in the pan, and again in a month or so with what I find out.
