2020 super cab, yesterday I closed the door and ran an errand. got home & tried to let my buddy out of the truck but the door would not open.
looking closer I noticed the handle was not in the usual position. I could not find a way to release the door latch. see pictures......

When this happens in the 4G it is the plastic cable retainer ends breaking from age. There are inexpensive aluminum replacements. If the door handle moves but nothing happens it is likely something like this . They are $8 - $9 for an 8 pack on Amazon. I've changed them all out on my 2005 Ranger.

Looks like Ford may have changed the design somewhere along 2015. Seems awfully early for these to be wearing out.

I've attached the R & R instructions for the Door Latch. It looks quite similar to the 2005 Ranger.

Pop the outer cover off with a trim removal tool to access the bezel cover below.

Remove (1 ea) screw and then pop the bezel off with the tool.

Inspect the broken door handle to see if repair or replace is needed, the handle is connected to 2 cables that feed up and down to the door latches.

update: the truck was scheduled for service & inspection today so I asked the dealer to check out the problem with the door. it was fixed with no charge to me
I asked what the problem was but the service writer didnt know except it took the mechanic less than 5 minutes to repair it. I`m happy & my buddy is really happy ! :like:

That’s the dealer we all want! I’m glad they took care of that for you.

I was going to make a comment on your initial post about your buddy likely breaking it - yep, you got me. Good one. ?

Yes - I was (?) on the issue of not wanting to exit on the passenger side, made me wonder about the buddy but did not think - Dog, I was thinking along the lines of disabled in some way

You mean to tell me that ford still hasn't learned to improve their products after a couple decades? My 01 F150 needed the cable ends replaced because the cheap plastic broke rendering the door handle useless. As much as I like the Ranger, my faith in the long term for this vehicle is dwindling as I am seeing issues that have been issues for years not only being ignored but made to be more complicated and expensive to fix (blend door comes to mind).

in the picture it shows the interior door panel had pulled away from the metal.
whatever the mechanic did it now looks just like the other side and or never had
an issue.
from time of the truck purchase my buddy has always used the driver side for enter/exit (except for the one time he thought he would ride shotgun.....wife was not happy) ....habits are hard to break :)

Yep, it was such a problem that 3rd party vendors created a cheap fix, replace the broken plastic end with an aluminum end that simply slips over the existing cable end. But you still had to remove the panels to get to the latches, and while you are in there you might as well replace all 4 of them in each door. I did just that on my 2005 Ranger about 5 years ago. Both back doors failed within a month, and my truck was always in the housed in the garage. Still driving it regularly.

Yea I had to make those same repairs, amongst many others, on my 01 S'cab F150. After searching the forums and taking with some friends that are through and through ford guys and how infallible they are who confessed that they too had to do the same thing as well at one point. Maybe I just need to stay off the forums and enjoy my ranger as I really do like the truck so far in my one year of ownership.

I remember being a teenager in the back of a S'cab on the way to scouting trips, no way I would be subject an adult to that torture . Still nice to have waterproof storage though.

Oh I will, just disheartening to see all the different issues and trends, especially since I am approaching 90k miles now.
