What are you guys towing?

Purchased my 2022 Ranger XLT April 2022. Seeing the 7500lb max trailer with max 10% tongue wt, I was skeptical. Joined RVezy and found a rental Apex 185BH 21ft unit at 4000lb loaded. Quick 90 minute trip west of Calgary to Waiparous, I was surprised. Big climbs and turns, no shortage of power and stable on a single axle. I used the Ford Accessories REDARC controller, and worked perfectly. Mileage was about 12-14mpg (17-20L/100km for us up north).

No sway on this trip, but you can see it needs an equalizer to take out the squat. I made sure I was loaded evenly. After seeing others on this forum pulling larger rigs, I would like to try towing a bigger unit (Maybe a 245BHS, ~4700lb twin axle empty with 6500 Gross Wt). Wish the gas tank was bigger, but I can see some pricey retrofits on the market.

Tandem axle will definitely help and add a level of safety if one does get a flat! My trailer max is like 7400 or something, I forget. Partially loaded pretty sure I'm approaching 5,500 with water. I do plan to get to the cat scales and get some honest numbers for the long term future planning. I never thought much about the weight Distribution hitches until this combo. I have towed this in high wind, on the way home from purchase, with just the distribution hitch and a little in my Air lifts, in a pretty good Autumn storm with 30-40 mph side winds. Behaved well enough, but I will use the sway control that came with it going forward for the extra security. Happy trails. Look for the trailer that best suits your needs. You don't have to use all the Gross weight and some of the layouts are worth working with. That's why I got the Surveyor. We really liked the floorplan and abilities for this old couple. I don't see many toy hauler's on here. Is it reasonable to tow a small toy hauler (without a toy) with the Ranger? My main concern is tongue weight as they tend to be a bit higher than a regular TT. Looking at about 22 feet total length plus or minus a bit. dry weight close to 4k. Tongue weight is quite variable. I got a Sherline scale to measure tongue before purchase.
This is an example trailer I plan to look at.

Tentative yes on that one, it looks to be small enough that even loaded up (Especially if you are careful with where you load things, and yoyur talking about camping gear and not a 'toy') it should be ok, although of course the only real way to find out is to weigh it.

I don't believe that advertised hitch weight though. Even in 2006 they would have built them to have more weight on the tongue, although it only has one propane tank so that's something.

I would only be hauling camping gear and maybe bicycles/kayak. No motorized “toys”

If it’s too heavy back to the drawing board… bigger truck/smaller trailer.

So that toy hauler was way heavier than quoted. 850lb empty.
Found this newer single axle 5200lb ish rating. Forest River wolf pup 17RP. Tongue weight was 525 as it sat with a few things in it and a generator rack over the propane tank.
I towed it home with a husky centerline wd hitch. It was not adjusted the best but I had no issues. For reference my truck has fox/ford level kit with icon leaf pack on the heavy load setting.

Thanks!!! Weight for the trailer is 4194 dry and 5645 lbs GVWR. I can't ever see towing that max weight any real distance, even with the fresh water tank full I don't know where you come up with another 1500 lbs in a trailer this size. Right now I am guessing that I have 4500-4700ish that is "trailer" stuff. We kinda see this as a mobile tent so it basically just has camp kitchen stuff, cleaning stuff the stuff for full hook up sites, etc.

Very similar to my my setup, maybe slightly bigger. Pulled mine across country and works great for the two of us. Having your own bathroom to use works great for those emergency stops in the middle of nowhere, just need a place to pullout. Also great for a quick overnight at a truck stop or a Walmart, if your trying to get from A to B. Small tank kind sucks, but at our age we need to stop at about the same time as a fillup to stretch. So, it all works out.

You would be/will be shocked when you see how quickly that "1500" lbs accumulates.....food, clothes, bedding, cook ware, toiletries, and just "stuff". It all adds up, very fast.
I see it's a Bunkhouse, so kids are with you, right ??? Add in their "stuff", a full fresh water tank, and I'll bet you add at least 1000 lbs !!!
But, even with that, it's still an easy pull for the Ranger.
But, enjoy it, safe travels and many happy memories.....
