Possibly! This wasn't difficult for me but I feel like I'd want that bed space for wet gear after I'm done paddling and keeping the kayak on a bed rack will keep things tidy/accessible. I've seen what you're talking about, though! I believe in MA it's 4ft for overhanging... not sure if that counts towards tailgates being down or up.
I put our yaks up on top of the yakima rack... 2 x10ft and 1 x12ft
I easiest to put bow on tailgate, and get up there and drag it onto crossbars, and than push it up from the stern the rest of the way... Easier than hefting up from the ground on the side of the truck.

I really like the rack (and basket) the boats sit a few inches above the cab.

Thanks for the tip! Speaking about the kayaks do you feel any difference paddling on the 10 versus the 12?
Gorgeous blue tremor by the way!

After posting that picture I just realized y'all are probably checking for a tailgate dampener first and not paying attention to the brightly colored kayak!
That’s a beautiful kayak. Happy Birthday!!!??

Thanks! I think it was a good decision. ?

I got the 12 because I was carrying our daughter on longer outings... If I did it again, I would get a 10ft.... It's not worth the extra weight and length anymore. She has her own boat.

I have a tarpon 120 ,the gf has the tarpon 100. Hers is noticeably more maneuverable and faster (less surface contact) than mine. I can carry a cooler, and a bag of beach stuff and don't notice it though... Trade offs.

The kids yak is a old otter xl we got for 100 bucks during the height of the pandemic when you couldn't find kayaks anywhere. It is very wide and has a smooth bottom so it maneuvers really well, but is super tippy...

Thank you! I've been wanting one for years. Saw the sale and knew it was the right time.
It's actually nice being able to celebrate my birthday for once. For a while it was just another day but now that I'm part of my partner's family they've helped bring back that feeling! ?

I was talking with my folks about Old Town and they said they've been around and make decent kayaks and what not. At first I thought of Pelican brand but I saw the Old Town and it looked like the better deal. Has a waterproof compartment at the stern and slots for the paddles.

What's the exact model for your bed rack? It looks like the adjustable one. At first I thought of the retractable tonneau with the t-slot rail for a rack but that's over $2000 excluding the rack.

Yakima overhaul HD https://yakima.com/products/overhau...3.1165112658.1687317499-2083328439.1687317499

Look at the load limits for the bed racks when you install it with a bed cover. Because of how the mounting changes payload drops, in some cases by a lot.

I bought my rack in pieces from REI when they were having a sale so I save 20% off the regular price.

I think most kayaks out there these days will work, some just have more creature comforts. Fun fact, the perception kayaks are supposedly just the old molds for wilderness systems... I read that on some obscure kayaking forum when they were discussing why some boats were very similar.

I like having the waterproof compartment, I still carry most of my stuff in a waterproof duffle behind me so its easy to reach.

If you really want a bed cover, look at diamond back and see if that would work for you, they are rugged and still have a high carry capacity... There are tons of cons though... Cost... Loss of using the bed for tall things.... Stuff gets lost in the bed etc...

Heck this with a decked drawer system though could work nicely.... https://yakima.com/products/longarm?_ga=2.42174949.1165112658.1687317499-2083328439.1687317499

I drove it to the lowes depot stores looking for weedwacker stuff. This heat has got to go.

Then i saw a video of Ford showing off their new heavy duty trucks with 40k tow capabilities, and look!!!!! They are using

GEN-Y HITCHES!!!!

HAHA. 40k was with a gooseneck trailer. But they had GEN-Y HITCH for all bumper pulls!! Under 40k of course.

Picked up some plywood and MDF. Can't find Baltic Birch anymore but found European multi plywood popular to try with the same plys.. Can't believe the prices, that's almost $500 for a couple sheets. I will never buy another truck that is less then 49 inches between the wheel wells.
