I replaced the factory muffler with a Borla muffler in the stock system. Looks like the shop added a length of standard pipe to fill a gap between the tailpipe an the replacement muffler. The other day the tailpipe broke from the added length of pipe an I heard the it banging around. I thought about slipping a piece of pipe over the break an clamping it on but there isn't much to grab on the tailpipe section because it starts to curve over the axle right after the break.

Sounds like a good reason to try a 3" cat back. I'm looking at the MBRP that's around $355. My only concern is I live in Ohio an do a lot of short trips an I'm afraid it not being stainless it won't last long.

I like the Bold performance system because it's stainless but it replaces from the factory muffler back an it isn't a 3" system. I haven't taken a good look at where the Borla was attached to the factory pipe to see if I could cut it off an slip a different one on or if it was modified by the muffler shop.

I have a Livernois tune so I wonder if my truck would gain anything from a 3" cat back system with the down pipe output being 2.5"

Think some of that reasoning you talked yourself into the 3” ? If it were me and I was keeping it longer than 3 years I would go all stainless cat back 3” and get your tune adjusted for the free flow that comes with it. Probably see a little bump in getty up!

If I go stainless for a complete cat back I may have to patch this one together for a while an upgrade later.

Baked bean can and some clamps that'll be good as new. Probably get 10k before you need a new can.

I was going back and forth on if I should get a local shop to do the work or buy a kit and bolt it on myself. I don't have to deal with as much rust.. but that sort of crazy is not something I want to mess with down the road.. suddenly exhaust leak/break. Might start shopping around. Don't really want the bigger pipe or need any crazy stainless for my weather. I just don't want to hope the person welding knows what they are doing. I sure as hell don't.

I'm not in the Rust Zone but went with a cat back system with the 'million mile warranty' just so I'd (hopefully) never have to deal with this. Never liked the cheap look of the factory system - I suppose like you - and the tone is a bonus affirmation of the price. My family commented on the sound even though it's supposed to be quietest among the aftermarket.

Got mine from hot exhausts dot com out of Canada on sale but if I hadn't gone with the MF I'd have gotten the stainless MBRP.

A proven rule of plumbing is that flow in a given pipe is restricted to the max flow of the smallest component of the assembly, so the 3" pipe will be limited by the 2.5" downpipe. But it looks meaner and may sound better, so there's that. And if later you choose to upsize the downpipe to 3", the rest of the system is done.

Performance gains will be minimal. I'd go with a stainless option that you like the sound of. That Bold Performance one, being stainless, should last you a long time. And you really won't leave much, if anything, on the table performance wise.

That being said, if you like the sound of you Borla muffler, I'd spring for the Borla cat back.

Exhaust sound is VERY subjective. And oftentimes a clip online doesn't tell the whole story.

Exhaust is one of the last things I will do probably because I want to do a custom rear bumper passenger side exit pass through port. Just for my own feel good purposes I had the factory muffler (what a bloated tub that thing was) and put in a Flowmaster 40 series in. Loud on warm up, quiet on idle, decent on WOT, and doesn't sound like a fart can.

I just painted my tip with high temp black paint.

Between the Flowmaster and the Boomba BoV adapter it fills my check box for fun sounds.

The powder coated cat back from MBRP is pretty solid, i have them installed on both of my rangers and my mustang. Sounds great and get exposed to nasty weather/road conditions here in Canada. Only downside is once they get warn in you will get a tad of drone on the highway. MBRP claims their exhausts don't have drone but they do...

I like the dual exit kit from Ford Performance (Borla made if I remember correctly). It was a simple install, though your install location may have been altered with that last install. If corrosion is a concern, why not directly to titanium?

If you go Off-road from time to time Magnaflow now has the "Overland series" exhaust available. Essentially it's using their muffler with the tail pipe tucked under the bed for clearance

That MBRP is going to look like the rusted section in a couple years.

Honestly, I don't think your Livernois tune will take advantage of any extra air flow......
Even though you tell them your mods, I don't think the programming changes for anyone buying their OTS tunes.....IMHO
