Heading to my doctor's today for an appointment I got surprised when lane assist took control. On a county road that just has center lines I came around a corner and there was a bicyclist riding on the side of the road. There was a car comming in the opposite direction and I had plenty of room to go around the bicycle. As I crossed over the center line my lane assist quickly started steering towards the bicycle. It was the most force I had ever felt from it and good thing I had a good grip on the wheel. Scared me some because if I hadn't had a firm grip there could have been a bicycle down. I guess it may have seen the oncoming vehicle and over reacted but there was plenty of room to safely go around the bicycle. I did have the lines in about the center of my Ranger when it really started to get forceful. I wanted to give the bicyclist plenty of room. Just a first time surprise that scared me some and I may turn that feature off now.

You can adjust the setting so it just vibrates the steering wheel and not steer for you.
Thanks, I just switched it to that. Surprised that it didn't see the bicycle and figure I was avoiding it.

Perfect example of why I keep the lane warning turned ON but the assist turned OFF! I do not like a vehicle steering for me. Please warn me, but leave my steering alone!!!

Never even thought of the scenario you just experienced. That could have really ended badly.

Didn't you see the option on the "Hunters Special Hood" option when you got your Ranger........

Didn't have that option in 2022. Must have been deleted to save money.

It only sees the lines or edges of the road. It also only comes on if you don’t use your turn signal. Keeping it off or dialing it down helps for this type of situation.

It was a big surprise to me. I rarely ever cross the line and usually there is just a light nudge. I would think it would recognize a bicycle and not fight back to try and get it.

We only have lines in the center around here on secondary roads and the lanes are quite narrow. Wonder if that affects it. I set it to vibrate now. I just don't trust it anymore.

I played with Lane Assist just enough to know I didn't like it and turned it off.

Crash Avoidance flashes at the craziest times as well. It once went off when it saw a freezer metal wire shelf laying flat in the road. It caught me completely off guard. I turned around to determine what set it off and found the 2'x2' flat wire rack in my lane. I drove over the the rack 3 more times at different speeds and it never went off again. I will be turning Crash Avoidance off as well.

Hey Ed,

It works as designed and understanding what it does and doesn’t do might earn a bit more of your trust.

The Lane Keeping System only needs to detect one line on the road for it to function. It didn’t recognize the bicyclist because it’s not designed to detect a bicyclist or someone walking on the side of the road - it just recognizes the lane and if your truck is drifting without signalling.

Pre-Collision Assist can detect a pedestrian or bicyclist but they have to be “within the driving path” of the truck (directly in front of it). Pre-Collision Assist will give an audible and visual warning and eventually initiate braking if you don’t but it won’t steer your truck or bring it to a stop.
