Having just done mine, I’d rather do a current model Ranger vs a Chrysler with a Slant Six?
Worst I ever did was a 79 Thunderbird my uncle had back in the day. Drain plug was directly across from the frame rail and when you removed it oil hit the frame and sprayed everywhere. I said screw this and never changed his oil again.

I've yet to do mine, used dealer so far but best ever design for the oil filter has to go
to Subaru, It's on top, so easy. Right in back of air box.

The first vehicle I saw with that design was my wife's MB back in '98 . Her new one is the same . You unscrew the cover and let the filter cartridge drain in the built in funnel while you are vacuuming out the old oil . The new Bronco with the 2.7 has that now I think . Easiest oil changes ever .

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Nope because I stopped going there back in the 80's lol No offense Wes but JL would be the last place I'd ever go for an oil change. Heck I'd drive it 20K if I had to before letting them touch my truck. They messed up and didn't tighten my filter on one of my brand new cars way back in the early 80's and I haven't been back since. Hopefully you can get it changed out tomorrow morning.
Last time I went there the filter blew off before I got 20' out the door, seems they used the wrong filter, and like you I haven't been back since.

Ask me about the time I had the Ford dealer handle crash repairs on my first Ranger. They're about 100yds from the highway entrance. Accelerating down the on ramp the turbo fell off. This was about three days before I had to leave to drive to Baja Sur.

Met a Porter at one of the dealerships I used to visit that worked at a quick lube place. He said they couldn’t possibly stock all of the oil filters they needed so they were told to “wash out” the filter if they didn’t have one.

NEVER going to one.
Nope, don't believe a word of it..... :(

Favorite filter location when I did my own was a vertical filter install after filling the filter with oil. My current Chrysler 5.7L is set up this way... :)

Could it also be that JL uses the pit to dop the oil and filter, where they can't access the filter on a Ranger while down in the pit?
True, that could be the reason.

All the posts on here talking about DIY as the ONLY way to make sure it is done correctly. Like another member didn’t just post about accidentally using the wrong filter when performing their own work - and how it cost them an engine…

My understanding is once the driver's side steer tire is removed, oil filter access is a bit easier. This is the procedure I've observed at the Ford dealer Quick Lane when they change oil/filter and rotate the tires - driver's steer tire is the last to be mounted.

Let's see. $30 for oil, $10 for filter, with tax about $43. Plus my time to do the oil/filter change, collect and dispose of used oil and filter, plus time to rotate tires and check brakes, fill wiper and coolant tanks. Maybe 90 minutes?
Versus 45 minutes and $65 at Ford Quick Lane. Yeah, I am not doing my own oil changes any more.
Oil is bit more expensive in California but I get the gist…

You definitely don't need to remove the tire to get easy access to the filter. All you have to do it point the tires to the passenger side.

You beat me to it.... ?
That’s exactly what they asked me to do, kids with the right tools and knowledge which from this thread implies are simpletons, not in my experience but they were a little sloppy nonetheless. No biggie… need to clean up better after refill.:.
