Last week, order banks opened up for 2023s, so I fired off my build to granger to get it rolling only to find out 501A is on restraint and I can't order what I want at this time. I figured I'll just wait until it opens, then go from there.
On Thursday, I received a customer cash back mailing good for $1250 towards a ranger in the mail. I decided it might be worth my time to see if I could find something close enough and make a deal, so searched all the local dealers to see what was out there.
Dealer 1- lariat 501a fx4 avalanche edition
Their starting point - MSRP + $499 for the pulse brake light safety device they install on every new vehicle they sell. Yes, gimmick crap add on of pure profit.
My first offer - $2k under sticker, remove the brake light gimmick crap.
Their counter - MSRP, +$199 for pulse.
My counter back - X plan, no pulse.
Them, no thanks, won't do x plan on in stock unit.

Dealer 2 - lariat 501a tremor
Thier starting point - MSRP, but made mention that they had been doing over on every tremor they had received up till now.
My offer - X plan.
Their reply, we will order at X plan, won't sell from stock.

Dealer 3 - lariat 501a fx4 avalanche
Their start - MSRP
My offer, X plan.
Their counter - maybe. need to know trade, have to be willing to finance with dealer.
My response, no trade in, financing with them not a problem(I'd just refinance it out if wasn't competetive)
Their response - can't guarantee we can make that work, but if you come in to the dealer with a x plan code, and want to see what we can work out the manager would be willing to look at it if you were here in store.
Me - no thanks. If I can't be in and out in an hour, I'm not interested.

So, it's not as bad as it was, but the dealers are still going to hold on to their inventory to get the best money they can out of them, which since none of the dealers had more than 2 rangers in stock, I can't blame them. All of them were more than happy to place an order for x plan, which of course I'm not interested in with Granger being my first choice for ordering.
Now I'm back to waiting for restrictions to get lifted on my option package. And hope timing works out where I get another cash offer from ford about the time it comes in.

I did a quick search just for giggles last week on internet.
The Ford site only goes 10 miles out. I could go 60 miles out in 2020.
Nothing to find.
I would need to put postal code to search further... could not be bothered.
If you can wait 6 months things might change & there may be many vehicles
on the lot.

I get where you're coming from and I do things out of principle too. But won't you be loosing more by waiting for the restrictions to be lifted if the $1,250 goes away? I'd at least go done to dealer #3 and see if you can work something out. Sorry but a couple hours of my time is well worth $1,250.00.

From the dealer's point of view there is no point in selling an in-stock vehicle on X-Plan and taking less money when there is still a shortage of vehicles and other people will pay full pop and then some.
I got mine when the shortage was just starting and went to the dealer with my X-Plan pin from my employer with every intention of ordering but they had a 2020 with 5000 miles that someone traded back in on an F-150 because it wasn't big enough. It was 95% of what I wanted and even the color was right. It cost a little less than a 2021 with X-Plan.
Fast forward to last month. My secretary totaled her car, not her fault. Our employer has discounts with the Big Three and she wanted a Chrysler Pacifica. Took her discount code to a Chrysler dealer and they told her that with the vehicle shortage they simply weren't accepting discounts.

Decent dealers are so few and far between these days it’s ridiculous.

My wife and I got my Ranger and her Edge from our local Ford dealer right before the car market got completely upended. Now that dealer that I used to like and though was a good place to do business has been selling Rangers with their stupid add-on off road packages for $55k+.

They’ve also got into the market of buying new, in-demand vehicles from other Ford dealers, putting 100-200 miles on them and selling them as used for whatever price they want. They currently have a “used” F-150 Lightning with 111 miles on it. Window sticker is $93k. It’s on the lot for $130k.

With inflation running rampant the prices you see now won’t be there in 6 months. Everything will be more expensive in the long run. Your biggest savings would be to land now before everything gets jacked up more. That will also include interest rates on loans.

I'm thinking the economy will tank, hence, wait.
Less buyers, more inventory.
Roll the dice, who knows. ?

Talked with a local Ford Dealer sales mgr a few days ago, one of the larger in my area, Obaugh Ford in Staunton Va.
They had a total of 5 new Fords on the lot with 2 of them sold. He basically told me that within a year or so...2-3, Ford is going to be going to an order system, and the days of dealers lots being filled are over. Any stock they get in will be in dribbles. There ordering 2023's is hit & miss right now and there not guaranteeing anything ordered will arrive or even be built.
There service facility is doubling in size as they are going toward a service oriented dealership, with a lot having to do with EV's.
My 2021 is just gonna keep going up in value :handsinair::handsinair::handsinair:

Xplan minus the rebate is essentially the same price as ordering from granger for 3% under invoice with no further discount. Ordering gets me exactly what I want instead of settling for what's available. I don't fault the dealers for holding on to stock to find the right buyer, but I'm not in a spot where I can't just wait.

I found mine on auto trader in March, only Supercab I could find within a 600 mile radius , got an absolutely horrible deal , I believe it was the "F" plan , still gave the salesman a tip and was "making it rain " out my driver's window when I pulled away laughing maniacally ... it was all one's, but still...

Ya but, I bet the mods afterwards were making the original outlay child’s play looking back at it now! ?

Thing is, dealers have bills to pay too. I was briefly a car salesman in the 80's. If they have very few vehicles to sell then they have to make more money from each vehicle they do have. Maybe you're selling 15 cars a month instead of 60 because it's all you have. If Ford (or any automaker) doesn't want their dealers price gouging, then fine, get more vehicles to the dealers. Build your own chip factory if you have to.

Ok, that's a weird comment.
You know they can't do that right?
The real problem was offshoring & just in time deliveries.
I could be wrong, probably am, but if half the stuff would be made in the
America's (north/central & south) maybe we would not be in such a mess.
Single point of failure is the problem. Our boys frigged up, plain & simple.

Yeah, right...
You don't just snap your fingers and build a "chip plant". Couple being built and planned, but at costs of 12-15 billion dollars and 2-5 years to build. Not something Ford can do !!!

I started saying this back in the mid 1980’s. We produced much of what we used. Then the offshoring and moving operations to Mexico started. In the US back then the machine tool industry was 80 billion a year across all manufacturing. Within 2 years it went from that to 21 billion a year. That’s when we became a service economy and not manufacturing.

Here we are today, bunch of fat cats at the top and all us are arguing over the scraps. This isn’t rocket science. It was a calculated move to go to a one world economy with us pulling the strings!
