What happens if I put a regular tire on that rim? Still a temporary?
My 2019 Lariat has a painted 17" spare rim with a 265/70/17 Cooper Rugged Trek just like the other 4 tires on the truck. I would drive it as far as needed without hesitation.

See that’s what I thought. The spare looks like a regular hankook that I assume the truck came with all around. It doesn’t at all look like a temp tire.

Because the stock spare tire is a hankook atm. My fx4 had the exact same 5 tires. Before I got my Coopers at about 25k miles I ran over a nail and drove 500 or so miles on my "spare" waiting for my new tires to come in without issue . Would do it again.

I changed out the Hankook spare tire, and put a full service 275/70-17 Wrangler ?AT on the factory steel spare rim.

In April 1/4 way into a ~2,000 mile road trip and had to install the spare. I ran at 60-70 miles for the remaining 1,500 miles with no issues. Three runs of 500 miles continuous driving other than fuel stops. The other three tires are 285/70-17 for 0.6" difference on the diameter.

I assumed the speed reduction was due to the tire having a lower speed rating (which it did) and gave very little thought to the rim have a reduced speed rating.

@P. A. Schilke does have me questioning that assessment now and I am curious if the rim is also reduced speed. Ford parts steel rim (KB3Z-1015-B) description doesn't provide much info.

I am putting bigger tires on my truck. They went to change out the spare tire and the wheel on the spare is a 17". The wheels on my truck are 18". Is this some stupid shit Ford does or did I get the wrong size spare? Did you guys get the same tire for a spare from the dealer?

well crap - I just went to garage and looked, I have a 22 Lariat with 18" and now, I know I have a 16" spare, not sure how much off-set it will be when mounted on truck, it is common to have different size spare rim sizes - it's the tire sidewall height that makes the difference. (Think, donut spare) I have only had the truck 1 month as of today, so it's good to know

Mine is aslo a 2022 but an XLT with the FX4. That's weird your spare is 16". I've found a couple threads people discussing the different size spare. I just assumed they gave me the wrong tire which sounds crazy to me.

Yes it is a common practice that ford uses on these trucks. Check the label inside the drivers door jam and it will show the size they put under your truck. My Lariat Sport has 17” on the ground and a 16” spare. I looked up the two tire sizes and they are the same diameter. Bridgestone 225/65R17 Dueler H/T on truck and Hankook 255/70R16 Dynapro HT spare. Both listed as 30.1“ Dia.

That is pretty crazy, makes you wonder how much money did Ford really save with this stunt? I've always believed that customers are won and lost in details like this, when you start wondering what else they skimped on.

My Ranger came with 18's 265/60/18 but I just noticed my spare is 265/65/17. While on paper there's not much difference, I would have preferred they provided the same wheel. Should I ask my dealer for the same spare?

At some point, I'll likely change my wheels, but I don't know when.

Welcome to the club, this is standard for most. Another cost cutting thing I think

i think during periods of shortages ford put 17s as spare on 18 wheeled trucks but the diameter is going to be the same overall. so think of it like a donut spare and not a regular full spare.

Mine is that way on my '22. 17" wheels.......spare is a 16". Checked the size on the spare and is very close to the 17" as far as diameter.
