i know this is pointless but as we are talking on things hard to get in trucks like manual trans etc. have yall seen the mahindra trucks over seas? man i love em. full size bed 4 doors 4x4 manual with a turbo diesel and truck gearing. i wouldnt pass off my rangers for one due to the comfy factor of the usa spec cars and trucks but if i still had land to work or a ranch the lil mahindra would be the bees damn knees lol.
Looks like a Range Rover truck!
the styling is eye catching.

Drove about 500 miles in my buddies 2019 Taco towing a kayak trailer with 3 kayaks and fishing gear…it was a painful drive! That truck will not shift to upper gears on the highway with a trailer. Running such high RPm’s getting about 14-15mpg.

Drive the Tacoma before you jump in.

I drove multiples thinking that I may have just driven a bad example but they all drove the same.

Either Toyota is way overrating their V6 or Ford is way underrating their 2.3 EB power numbers.

An OV tuned Tacoma still makes far less HP at the wheels than a stock Ford Ranger.

And torque is even more embarrassing for the Toyota.

After the 1999 Mustang Cobra horsepower debacle, you can pretty much bet that any HP number Ford releases is on the low side of manufacturer variances.

These dyno results are just for comparison as everyone knows that dyno output varies based on which dyno, the weather that day, what type of creamer was in your coffee, and how much spare change is in your pocket.

It still shows how wide the disparity is for a 278HP V6 vs a 270HP EB 2.3.

Taking the best run with premium fuel for each:

Tacoma: 239HP and 230TQ (rounded up)
Ranger: 264HP 290TQ (rounded up)

And unless the Ranger has an outright silly efficient 10 speed auto, there is no way that 270HP can get 264 at the wheels. My math shows that to be a bit over 300HP.

Dyno charts below. YMMV.

In general I feel that Engines with more Hp and less torque do better at the higher RPM range. And engines with more torque and less HP prefer the lower end? That is if you were comparing the 2.3 eco boost with the 3.5 atkinson. This has been pattern I have noticed over the years. Maybe manufacturers can maximize this equation or have been so for a long while. Thanks for including the dyno results. It’s funny they say online “a turbo 4cylinder can make as much power as a larger displacement naturally aspirated V6 counterpart. I think the eco boost would be better off competing against the Colorado with the v6 all direct injection. Or the pentastar 3.6 which is also full direct injection.

What hurt worse, your back or your foot from having to press down constantly?

The whole way driving I just kept thinking in my mind “SHIFT!!!”
Baffles me why there is soooo many of them on the road.

It is not "in general", it is mathematically defined. HP is a mathematical expression that was developed by James Watt so he could compare the power of his steam engines to the work a horse could do. Simply put HP=Torque x RPM ÷ 5252. So if you know HP and RPM you can
calculate the torque and vice versa.

For a street driven vehicle that has to operate over a wide RPM range you will get better overall performance if you design the engine to produce peak torque at a relatively low RPM and give up torque (HP) at high RPMs. Adding a turbo can spread out the torque curve make street performance even better. You quite often see turbo engines advertised as making 90% or more of the peak torque from around 2000 RPM to some RPM past the torque peak. This makes for stunning performance on the street.

The marketeers have for many years have pushed peak HP numbers to the point that the average person only sees that number. This has forced engine designers to design for a peak HP number knowing full well that they are giving up overall street performance.

Bahaha driving automatics are boring. I love manuals. Less time driving like a nutcase and more time shifting like one!

I'm 53 years old....my 19' Ranger is the 1st automatic vehicle I've ever owned. 78' Camaro, 88 5.0 Mustang, Sentra SER, Ford Explorer, Kia Spctra, Kia Forte, and 2 Focus ST's. If I could have gotten the Ranger in a 6-speed I would have.....but I certainly wasn't going to buy an outdated, underpowered Toyota just to have a manual.....and I needed a truck.

Okay maybe comparing a boosted smaller engine to a naturally aspirated is not a good clear example for this forum lol. I understand the physics of a automobile. Thank you for the equations and the google search info. It’s a “truck” not a sports car. Hopefully everyone has a good understanding of the difference of torque and HP on this forum, since they drive a pickup truck. The Tacoma excels in other ways compared to the ranger. For instance the ride quality is much better in a Tacoma sport vs a ranger sport. Vice versa in many ways on comparing these two trucks. All trucks are different. You can’t eat a strawberry and expect it to taste like a grape.

I'm only 5'7" and I couldn't stand the seating position. I probably could've found a way to deal with the drivetrain (tune?) but the seating was the nail in the coffin for me. It was so bad that when we'd go on vacations I would rent a car because driving it any more than an hour would kill my back. It felt like you were sitting flat on the floor with your legs straight out putting pressure on your lower back. Just going up to Flagstaff which is just over 2 hours I'd want to leave it there and walk back home. lol

On out trip up to Durango, CO in July of 2019 I met a woman at the gas station who just picked up her brand new Ranger, it still had the temp tags on it. It was the Saber color and we talked for about an hour and she was telling me how much she loved it already! Long story short when I got back home I jumped online, watched a bunch of videos and found this forum and within 2 weeks I bought mine right of the dealers lot. The one good thing about the Taco is that they hold their value and I got almost what I paid for it back in 2016. I have ZERO regerts! ?

I will have to update my standard answer regarding my feelings of the Tacoma's seating position, from "not ideal for people over 6 foot", to just "it sucks!"

Thanks for the insight. ;)

that’s quite the list! I imagine you are a wizard at seeing things across car manufacturers. was the Kia Forte a KOUP?

I really wish they had another nickname, I freaking love real Tacos ? always have , always will...

? That was my response most times but I felt it needed a little more detail here. lol I can't imagine how painful it must be when you have longer legs all stretched out in that God awful seat? :frown: You'd better have monthly unlimited chiropractic adjustments. ?
