so not that it really matters but a fun name for the engine might be cool. i think the v6 in my older ranger ended being called the vulcan for some reason. idk how a name for the 2.3 would fit against names like the voodoo, coyote, vulcan and so on. even gm had the old stove bolt. caddy had some v16s that could have been awesome names. i cant think of a good name for the current ranger engine. it is a powerful lil motor just the size limits the imagination to stuff like scrappy, junior, squirt and so on. its the smallest engine in a car or truck iver over owned. but not the least powerful oddly enough. its like a demented small dog, dont look like much but can really chew off a foot

The V6 engine your Ranger had was known as the Vulcan 3.0, it was a durable design, but very modest in it's specific power output.

My '00 Ranger had the 4.0 Cologne OHV V6 motor in it, a torquey little motor but it ran out of steam when you approached 3500 + rpm's. Any request for more power above that speed resulted in more noise (and fuel consumption) and virtually zero additional forward motion.

Indeed, any engine speed above 4,000 was needless thrashing of metal.

Then Ford used their OHC design 4.0 V6 starting in 2001 in Rangers, a very ass backwards design because you had to remove the engine from the vehicle to service the rear mounted timing chain components.

As far as I know the only difference between the 330/350 and 400/455 was the deck height on an otherwise identical block architecture.
You are right about the architecture, same bore centers, etc., which was smart engineering. I’m just saying that the taller deck height on the big blocks makes a difference. Perhaps we are saying the same thing. Perhaps it’s just semantics, but it’s not like they just changed the bore and stroke to make a small block into a big block. Due to the deck height and the larger main journal bearings of the big blocks, they were two separate engine lines that Oldsmobile referred to as small blocks and big blocks.

By the way, I’m all for 2.3L Cleveland, which wasn’t an option in the poll.

LOL...my choice is "Aluminum Duke", if Chevy could coin their venerable 4 banger as the "Iron Duke" then Ford should have the same opportunity.
Alas, it was not an option either.
:crying:
