Couple things-
Thing 1: Covid-related shortages haven't helped, but Ford historically has done this with virtually every model for years. Front load features, then reap profits over the model's run by decontenting or making features previously standard now in a premium package, while keeping the price the same or increasing. Taurus is a good example.
Thing 2: I think the reason for keeping the remaining latch on the passenger side is to keep the operator on the opposite side of traffic while the door is open.
Bonus track Thing 3: There may have been a liability case where the operator was using the former driver's side latch and got the door clipped by traffic.
Probably not for this reason, as the seat bottom has a latch on both sides.

Ok, I thought OP was referring to the seat back: "...pull the back seat bench down...”
Mine is fixed, being a SuperCab.

What's Crazier is that I keep the Trauma Bag mounted in the middle behind the seat so I can reach it from either side. Never occurred to me that I can only access the latch from the passenger side. DOH! Now I gotta relocate that.

seat back has one (1), slightly off centre, but in no way inaccessible from the left unless you're a newborn with very short arms.
seat bottom has two (3), one on either side.
mileage varies if you have that stubby cab version with wonky seats
Just for info, SupeCabs have a fixed setback held in with bolts, tabs and push rivets. the individual cushions are a quick release push and pull up & out design. The SuperCab is designed for 4 passengers; there is no center cushion or seatbelt, but curiously the seat back is full width.

Next thing you know we'll be getting 4 tires and a frame. The rest will be subscription based.

That's pretty much what Jeep did with the Wrangler. You spend $70k to get a base product that still needs another $40k of stuff.

Still - for all it's faults as a discount vehicle manufacturer, Nissan does do somethings amazingly well. Easy to access and fold flat seats is one of those. Can you imagine how much cooler a Ford Ranger would be if you could lay the back seat flat and then the two front seats flat to create a pallet. Makes the interior suitable as a sleeping space. I'd be OK with the pull down being on the wrong side of the truck and the non existant underseat storage if I could fold flat the seats - even just the back seat.

IDK I just bought my Jeep Rubicon 2dr and it's just about loaded and I paid $46,003 before taxes. Now I did get a deal with 4% under invoice but even before that the msrp was $50,720. Maybe the Cherokee (Trailhawk) or others are more for the base but I've never priced those out.
