Oh really? I guess that would have been nice to let the buyer know beforehand.
They have assured me this whole time , and up until 930 last nite (830 their time ...so ...closeing time) that this couldn't happen (double tax) and he would cut me a check if need be , then said they couldn't because they had already mailed it to WV to cover taxes ... I asked for copy of check , then calls late with the "rest of the story" I didn't get mad or cuss or anything and just chalked it up to a learning experience... Live and learn , live and learn... I did drive it to work one more time and im taking the long way home , and , no abuse here ,but im gona mash her down a few times ....

Either way , legal or not on my end , they have agreed to give me my 17500 back and I owe nothing and they will pick up ranger. I informed him I had all the texts where they say all thats supposed to have been done by them , probably some fine print that says otherwise but whos got time to read that stuff ? No biggie really , not sure what its gona cost them to get it (im 8 hours away at least) but Super cab available in Indiana soon if anybody in that area , im gona check their site soon and see if they mark it up ... Its got the tailgate letters now .... Oh , I got that little console tray/coin holdy thing I bought , ill snag that for somebody here maybe...
The dealer is going to make a killing on this. You get back your $17,500, and they are gonna turn that vehicle around for at least $32,000. With only 1000 miles and a SCAB, maybe even more.

Maybe that was the long con all along , pretty damn brilliant if so...

As a follow up, it looks like WV tax laws regarding vehicle titling just suck.

WV Division of Motor Vehicles

They impose a 6% "titling tax".

"Fees required to title a new vehicle include a $15 title fee, 6% titling sales tax on vehicles with a net purchase price over $500 or $30 on vehicles with a net purchase price under $500, $10 lien fee (if applicable), and the registration fee and/or registration transfer fee. "

Additionally:

"Most states do not collect taxes for non-resident purchasers. West Virginia does not charge non-residents the 6% tax since the vehicle is not being titled in WV. However, there are some states that do collect taxes on vehicle purchases. You do not get credit for taxes paid to another state."

So, the DMV is correct. You owe them sales tax. Indiana also collects sales tax on vehicles purchased by WV residents.

Sounds like you didn't do a very good job researching the tax situation before you bought it.

I had a similar situation when I bought my truck. The dealership miscalculated my sales tax and shorted the state. Due to Covid delays the deal was finalized with Ford Credit by the time the state contacted me. The dealership ended up eating half the $1600 difference.

If the dealer actually didn't do so I completely agree, but playing devils advocate and not saying this is the case, many times they do try to explain it and the customers either don't listen, understand, or forget. I've been in customer service jobs most of my life and some of the stuff I've seen has made me lose all faith in humanity lol so I'm a bit more cynical when a customer complains about that kinda thing

I already said I didint read it , or care to , I asked , thay said no , no double tax ,I believed them ,right up until late last night... And when they said taxes and title included , I belived that also... My bad , I don't think I have shed any fault elsewhere .... Its all for the better , if I kept the Ranger , id probably stay here and posting stuff , some dont like that a stubborn sob is allowed to post stuff on here , and must get alerts when I do cause here they come , that aint gona stop... To much disruption , all on me.... Maybe I post a joke once in a while on here... " Hey did you hear the one about the dumbass from WV that bought a Ranger out of state?"

Always read the contract ALWAYS, that south park episode with the apple service agreement comes to mind lol. While the stuff may have been included for one state it is not for the other that is your responsibility usually. Getting a repo destroys your credit and will cause you a whole lot of pain and strife for a very long time. I feel for you, but frankly this is on you for not doing your bare minimum due diligence and verifying. There is no need or reason to leave the forum but you can't expect us not to call you out for being irresponsible lol

On a side note , my phone rang a minute ago with the dealers number showimg.....hahahah I let it go to voice mail.... Im gona have some fun before this ends....

Well my 1000 mile test drive might be over , told dealer last night to "COME AND GET IT THEN!" Not what you think , I still want and love it ... Im in WV , dealer is Indiana , deal was supposed to include taxes ,title and all the usuals as their end of the deal , still have a little time on temp tags but went to DMV to get plates , finally get called to window (had all the paperwork needed ) then was told " sir , your total is $2342.05 ... No mamn , they sent a form where they collected that already , which I presented ... Was informed that paper was just that , paper , only way im getting legal is to pay , I did protest (no , im not banned from the DMV....yet) but figured it was a mistake and would call dealer and fix tomorrow , dealer was on it , not to worry , YESTERDAY , I called dealer to just , send me the taxes he collected and ill just go DMV it myself , again... Late last nite he calls with " well it looks likened had to get taxes from you here in Indiana and your gona have to pay the WV end.... Hahahah... We argued for a little (cordially) , and I simply explained I was not paying 2500 extra for this truck , not even 25 dollars , cause the whole "we had a deal thingy" he adamant on his stance so I (calmly) explained the truck will be pulled in my garage , tarped, and my first call this morning will be to Ford Motor Credit (one reason I always finance from the guys that made it) informing them of all that went down and where their very clean truck would be available for pick up , and that they can just keep the tailgate letters .... Also reminded dealer to bring my check of 17,500.00 when he comes to get it.... Well , damn it , he calles my bluff , with supriseinly little delay , so , sometime today , he is supposed to call with pickup details ... My gut is telling me there is NOWAY they are gona come get a truck in WV from way up in Indiana over 2500 bucks... But that just may be the case , i got a thousand mile test drive if nothing else , and another new truck when I can find one...
I also reside in the great state of West Virginia. About 5 or 6 years ago I bought a copy of used service vans for my business in Indiana and the Indiana dealer insider they collect sales tax and the reciprocal state thing. I think I paid cash for the one and financed the other.

anyway the one I paid cash for. The dealer sent me the title and a refund for my tax in form of a check. I thought oh this is good I’ll just with title in WV and pay tax here.

before I go to DMV the Indiana dealer calls me and says they made a mistake and I cannot cash their check. In fact she said there was a stop payment on it.

so thankfully it was only a 6k used van.
but yeah that Indiana dealer made me pay taxes to them and of course WV collected there’s as well.
Lived and learned.

Then your title is extremely misleading and you should definitely change it.

I 100% inquired about this VERY early on and often. ... I DID NOT research it or comb through tax codes , yes im a Moran and know some of you would have sent it to a forensic accountant first , I didn't and its on me ... I just believed the VERY LARGE , MULTIPLE LOTS, ONLINE Ford dealer when they said no worries , no double tax ... And really , there is no double tax foe me ...but no Ranger either ... ?

Retired, work is a four letter word.
In Calif if you purchase out of state and have to pay taxes then when you register it here they deduct that amount from the Calif taxes. Some states don't require you to pay if you are removing the vehicle from the state within a stated amount of days and purchase a 'Travel' permit. All depends on the state law, have never seen it where you have to pay for T/L/R to both states, one or the other, or split.
